Older Than the Ancients
Alchemist Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I'll carve the tale of the land we explored.
Stranded in a place I thought was fertile and calm.
I didn't know what hostile world laid ahead.
We were protected, Anubis judge of the dead.
Cursing the insects search for water in a sunburnt land.
We will go forward, I will persevere and never look back.
So they called me a son of a god, ironically as they laid me to rest.
Twice bitten, twice struck.
Lost motherland has swallowed us up.
I didn't know what hostile world laid ahead.
We were protected.
Anubis judge of the dead.
Read the glyphs they tell my story.
I'm the lost Pharaoh's son.
Seeking out the ancient myth of the great southern land.
Never again to see the waters of Mer.

Stuck within this southern land.
We can only defer.

Overall Meaning

In "Older Than the Ancients," Alchemist narrates a story of an explorer tackling the unknown world with a group of people. At the beginning of the song, the singer carves the tale of the land they explored. Initially, he thought they landed in a fertile and calm land until they encountered the hostile world that awaited them. However, they were not alone; they had Anubis, the judge of the dead, to protect them. As they move ahead, they curse the insects searching for water in a sunburnt desert but pledge to persevere and never look back.

The irony of labeling the singer a son of a god as they laid him to rest is revealed in the next verse. His motherland has swallowed them up twice, and they are stuck in the southern land. Although they are defer, the singer explains that he seeks out the ancient myth of the great southern land. The glyphs he reads tell his story as a lost Pharaoh's son. In conclusion, the singer and his group of explorers are stuck in the southern land, never to see the waters of Mer again.
