It is a hard-hitting, soulful song, entitled with the year of his birth. He tells the story of his childhood with references to characters and superheroes and events.
In his Billboard breakdown of Narrated for You, Alec shared:
""1994" is a coming of age song. In this song, I tried to include and describe certain events that shaped who I am today."
In his interview at the Zach Sang Show, Alec Benjamin narrated the process of coming up with the idea and lyrics for his song:
"I’ve never really done songwriting sessions before, I just moved our to California and I was with a friend who was like ‘Hey, I know this guy, he’s from Germany […]. Do you wanna write with him? […] I met up with him and we were writing this song in this preschool and I had the chords and he had like a little melody for the verse. […] And then he was like 'Wouldn’t it be cool [to sing] about your generation?’ and I was like ‘What if it’s like: This is where I broke my wrist […]’ and he was like ‘Oh, that’s cool!’. And then we wrote the song."

Where I thought I could fly
Thinking I was Superman
So you know you can't cry
Because I wanted to be just like them
And save my city from crime
I wanted to be just like them, just like them, just like them
When you stay home from school
Remember watching MTV
When there was still music for you
Just a kid on Cholla Street
From my city built in the sand
My father said, "You'll be a man, be a man, be a man"
I was born in 1994
I was born in 1994
I was, I was born
In 1994
I guess Santa Claus is just not real
And Batman can't fly
And nobody's invincible
Because I know people die
I saw it on the news one day
When the towers fell down
September's not the same place now, same place now, same place, now
Now tell me what you wanna be
Because you grow up too fast
I'll cut my hair and sag my jeans
And never show up to class
Get ready 'cause it's time to leave
So pack up your bags
And go be who you wanna be, wanna be, wanna be
I was born in 1994
I was born in 1994
I was, I was born
In 1994
My country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
My country tis of thee
Be who you wanna be
My country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
My country, my country
My country, my
I was born in 1994
I was born in 1994
I was, I was born
In 1994
In Alec Benjamin's song '1994,' the lyrics paint a picture of his childhood memories and aspirations. The first verse speaks of a time he broke his wrist by attempting to fly like Superman, which is symbolic of his desire to be a hero and protect his city from crime just like the characters he idolized. The second verse references more memories from his childhood - Campbell's chicken noodle soup, watching MTV when they played actual music, and his father encouraging him to be a man.
The chorus repeats the phrase "I was born in 1994" as a reminder of his youth and innocence. He then transitions into the bridge, where he comes to the realization that Santa Claus isn't real, Batman can't fly, and nobody is invincible. When he saw news of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center towers, it shattered his childhood beliefs about the world being a safe and secure place.
