The Phoenix, Arizona native caught the attention of Jon Bellion, earning a songwriting credit on Bellion’s debut album and later joined him on tour.

To build on the momentum, Benjamin began uploading new songs to his YouTube channel at a rapid clip and eventually earned a viral hit with “I Built a Friend” and a deal with Atlantic Records.

Benjamin connects to listeners by incorporating using his life struggles to tell stories and give meaning to his songs. You can see this in “Let Me Down Slowly,” “Paper Crown,” “I Built a Friend,” “Death of a Hero,” and “If We Have Each Other.”

As someone with depression, I've constantly had moments in my life where it took everything in me to take myself out of a dark place, and remind myself that there's gotta be a reason that I'm here and that I'm alive. So, the chorus really hit close to home. I couldn't be happier to have heard this song when I was in one of those dark times, since it really felt close to my heart. This is my favorite song now.

I really like the line “The changing of the seasons never changed my hurt.” It’s probably not what he’s referencing, but up here in Michigan it’s cold most of the year, and during the Winter, seasonal depression spreads like wildfire. It’s just beginning to get warm again, and I’m starting to feel a lot better, but the line just carries so much impact because even when everything gets brighter, you still feel like your own dark self.

Jeez, I can't help it! I'm forming a whole story for this album!
Something about a previously bullied boy (boy in the bubble)who did everything for his girlfriend (Annabelle?), but all she did was use and abuse him emotionally. All he wanted to do was make her happy even though he knew it was hopeless, and he eventually committed suicide (if i killed someone for you). The other songs in the album kinda link it together, and he could have been born in 1994. Death of a hero also links to it, idk. I'm just a fan looking to much into it lol but its amazing how Alec can create stories like these.., damn:)

EDIT: Slightly darker thought, but 1944 could be his thoughts as he is dying, i don't know. If We Have Each Other contradicts this whole thing but oh well lol

Hey Alec- not sure if you’ll see this but I have a story for you.

This year is my friend David’s first Christmas with his adopted parents. He was living with his birth parents and his brother Rayn his whole life, until when he was 10 and Rayn was 14, his dad died. That affected his mom a lot. She started taking drugs to take her mind off of it, and eventually lost her house. They were living in tents or in their car for awhile, and their mom got worse. Eventually, David and Rayn were put up for adoption. David is 11 and Rayn is 15 now. They have an adopted little sister as well, Natalya. He’s adjusting very well for his circumstances, but every once in a while he still thinks about his mom, and how if she gave up drugs, she could have kept her sons.

You, yes you, reading this random comment from a stranger u might never meet in your life. I want to tell u that it gets better. It may feel scary and you think your alone, that’s not true! When u are sad lots of ppl in that same time as u feel the same feelings. Just bc it’s hard right now does not mean it’s going to be like this forever. Life has its ups and downs but u can get through it. Just know that calling out for help does not make u weak. Be the strong person I know u are and fight through it! Remember u are not alone, millions of people are battling the same problems as u. Don’t end it because someone told u to or u are telling yourself to, it gets better...trust me...this one time.

we need more people to actually say something like this and the thing I hate is that people are going through a hard time and then someone makes it's harder I learnt one thing if someone is telling you you are not good enough or that you should kill yourself they are wrong and you should not listen to them only listen to you and if it's you telling your self that don't listen to yourself I believe everyone is here for a reason and everyone deserves to be happy and not feel like they are useless it may be really hard times now or even before now but hang on we care about you even if we don't know you and remember even if you feel alone you are not alone everyone has felt useless before but don't let it drag you down.
Whoever is reading remember never give up keep going follow your dreams even if your homeless go for it you only live once so make the best of it. whoever is reading this I hope you have a great day night evening or afternoon and remember you are worth more than you think.
