The Phoenix, Arizona native caught the attention of Jon Bellion, earning a songwriting credit on Bellion’s debut album and later joined him on tour.

To build on the momentum, Benjamin began uploading new songs to his YouTube channel at a rapid clip and eventually earned a viral hit with “I Built a Friend” and a deal with Atlantic Records.

Benjamin connects to listeners by incorporating using his life struggles to tell stories and give meaning to his songs. You can see this in “Let Me Down Slowly,” “Paper Crown,” “I Built a Friend,” “Death of a Hero,” and “If We Have Each Other.”

I know the true meaning of this song it kind of goes along with his “Worst Day of My Life” song, which is about him being dropped from the record label. He’s referring the a Devil to his boss. He moved to L.A. to try and find someone to produce his music, thinking he would find “Jesus in L.A.” The 2nd verse is about how his “boss” most likely saw a song/music video of his was doing well and thought he was pretty good. So he hired him and dropped him eventually. So sad to think that this could be the deeper meaning of the song. Hard to think that he could’ve left his home to only find someone to produce his music to then be dropped from the music label.

"Jesus In LA” is about moving to California and leaving my friends and family behind to pursue my dream. When I first got to LA I thought that I was going to finally find the happiness that I had always been looking for. Not long after I arrived, I signed my first record deal. Got dropped. Lost friends. Spent all my money… and had to move back in with my parents. It was then that I realized the thing that I was looking for most was in front of me the whole time. My true friends and family. Even at my lowest point, being back home with my family is what made me truly happy. The song isn’t a literal take on religion or about Jesus at all. It’s about searching for hope and happiness and realizing those things aren’t always where you think you’ll find them.

Some comments I’ve seen are great. It kinda worries me because people say they idolize you.
It seems you are a genuine and as honest as humans can be. I don’t believe in denomination.
I grew up in the opposite of a Christian family!
All the years I spent listening to others saying what I thought about God and Jesus and all that I found out I didn’t know diddly! I didn’t even know that Jesus lived in Roman times. I also had plenty of people telling me you’re get saved this way you could save that way. All my questions why did god do that why did God do this. I’m not trying to force anything on you if you actually get to read this just sharing my experience I’m a singer songwriter myself and I appreciate so much your lyrics and your genuinely being yourself super unique your voice is just so beautiful just doesn’t sound like everybody else I love that. I wish you much success in life. After 40 years I finally had a lot of realizations and I became saved and it is not all what I have been told my whole life. All I can tell you is ever since then things that have happened in my life have been increasingly and coincidental just kind of over the top really amazing. I believe everybody is equal race gender religion ethnicity whatever. These are things I’ve thought before I became saved and I was told you can’t speak to God unless you speak to Jesus you must be saved to do that well I know that all that was BS. I’ve had experiences in my life before I was saved literally miracle. I know now that your father has always been here for everybody saved her and saved. I’m still learning by reading the Bible myself because listening to men what it did to me you know. Things in my life have been seriously horrible and I saw this on YouTube one day this phase “only through the lens of affliction was able to see clearly”. I don’t know if you’ll ever read this or if anybody will no one is perfect and no one ever can be saved or not saved I got nervous because I don’t know that much about the Bible but the more I read I realize I realize that I’m still going to fall because I fell and I got nervous. But that happens apparently it’s like you know getting trained to be a Christian at my age do you know having all this other stuff in my head my whole life totally against God and my most recent years. All I know is that there is a huge gigantic difference between before I get saved and after and that difference really is just consecutive things that normally don’t happen coincidences that are just not I don’t know how to explain it. If you’re ever interested all I know is that you have a wonderful gift to reach people you are right now everybody has gifts and talents of some sort I know that I relate to music more so than anything. Do you know when you can’t talk to someone about intimate things personal things because of refusal of communication I would write songs to them got up my emotions. OK this is totally long I apologize but regardless what I’ve learned we’re all certain you’ve gone and Jesus dying on the cross I finally understood it still have some more to read but I would die for my daughter without even being asked questions that’s what the Lord did. Anyway I hope it doesn’t seem judge mental just your gift is a powerful gift don’t sign with a label take all your money make your own label produce yourself and that crap companies get you take so much of your money.
If you ever do get to read this or do I came across a guy called Tom McDonald his music is like wow a raw cress truthful and he reaches people to he’s gotten death threats because of so much truth he speaks. Quotes that truth is illegal I agree. AnyWho him and his fiancé wife woman I’m not sure his significant other they produce everything themselves did you see this list check out how he does it or whatever.

I used to think this song was about religion but I have really listened to the lyrics and I think it's about so much more, I think it's Alec looking for his "Jesus" or maybe meaning and he doesn't find it where he thought, and he gets really sad and ig looks for it in the only place he feels can help him is in the devil but again I don't think actually the divil, some symbolism to that too...? I was once in your situation. Nothing in this world ever really brought me happiness or joy.....literally nothing. But when I started seeking Jesus (the actual Jesus) I found that joy and peace I was longing for my entire life. He seriously changed my life ❤
I don't know exactly what you're going through but if you're broken, lost, feeling hopeless and empty, just cry out to Jesus and he WILL come through. If he did that for me what makes u think he wont do the same for u. 😊❤

This is really my favorite song of Alec. I listened to this a lot for months when I was dealing with so many problems in my life. And though I know the real meaning of this song. It just kind of uplifted me in a way. It's very calming and makes me clear my head.
