Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations, rise.
Join the triumph of the skies.
With angelic hosts proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King."

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace,
Hail, the Son of Righteousness
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth.
Hark, the herald-angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored, (Christ is the)
Christ the everlasting Lord, (Everlasting Lord)
Late in time behold him come, (Late in time behold him)
Offspring of the Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, (Veiled in flesh the Godhead)
Hail, the incarnate Deity (Sing with heaven "Hail, the Deity")
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus our Emmanuel.
Hark, the herald-angels sing,

Fall on your knees,
O hear the angel voices!
O night divine,
O night when Christ was born!
O night divine, O night,
O night divine!

O holy night!

Overall Meaning

The song Hark The Herald Angels Sing has become one of the most popular Christmas carols, and its origin can be traced back to the 18th century when an English composer named Felix Mendelssohn composed a tune entitled "Festgesang," which later would become "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." In the 19th century, a lyricist named Charles Wesley wrote the lyrics we know today.

At the beginning of the song, the angels sing "Glory to the new-born King, Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" which are words of joy and celebration in honor of the birth of Jesus Christ, who has come to reconcile humanity with God. The angels are inviting all nations to join them in proclaiming the good news of the new-born King.

The following verse calls Jesus the "Prince of Peace," and the "Son of Righteousness" who brings "light and life" to all. Jesus was born not only to bring peace but also to heal and save humanity from death. He is born to raise the sons of earth, to give them a second birth, and make them sons of God.

The last part of the song, "Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine, O night, O night divine!" invites the listeners to fall before Jesus, honor and worship Him, and glorify the miraculous night of his birth.
