Other interests and accomplishments were wide-ranging—he was a chess master, mountain climber, poet, painter, astrologer, drug experimenter, and social critic. He is perhaps best known today for his occult writings, especially The Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema. Crowley was also an influential member in several occult organizations, including the Golden Dawn, the A∴A∴, and Ordo Templi Orientis.

Crowley gained much notoriety during his lifetime, and was famously dubbed "The Wickedest Man In the World."

The Golden Dawn also included A.E. Waite as a member--the man responsible (in part) for the creation of the iconic Rider Waite Tarot Deck. He worked with the artist/theatrical designer Pamela Colman-Smith--a remarkable woman who was not given access to Golden Dawn 'membership', even though her psychic skills could run rings around the much-lauded Waite.

Not only did she design that card deck (78 Degrees of Wisdom, indeed); even though she was following Waite's lead in assigning 'meaning' to each card, especially the Major Arcana of 22 cards; she alone was responsible for the creation of the images on the 56 Minor Arcana cards--which tarot card artists have used as a template to this day!

Prior to these images, the Minor Arcana resembled a deck of playing cards, with only the numbers (1 through 10) suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles), and the sole 'picture cards' (Page, Knight, Queen, and King) displayed--no clues as to meaning, or interpretation.

It would be ENTIRELY AWESOME if you could, one day, do a deep dive into the history of this amazing, visionary artist. Psychics, Mediums, Artists, Designers have all taken their cue from her work. It is said she died penniless, living with a female companion somewhere in Cornwall. Her artwork has vanished, without trace. It would take a Grimm sleuth to unlock her story. I used to be a mentalist, and our secret society (Psycrets) was based in London. Through that art form I became the tech consultant for a TV Show called The Next Uri Geller. And I spoke to Uri afterwards and he invited us to his place whenever we were in the neighborhood. And he said Jimmy Page was/is his neighbour. I'm imagining Aleister Crowley and W B. Yeats having a "wizard duel" like two early 20th century geeks. That must've been a sight to see. Crowley was one of the most interesting figures from the spiritualist movement of that era, and I think the myths and legends that sprung up about him inspired his following by rock stars later. He allegedly conjured demons and opened portals to the netherworld, but most likely not. He was, in real life, kind of a trust fund baby, who indulged in hedonism and the early 1900s version of the jet set lifestyle. Not really anyone to emulate. That's what Ozzy sang about: "Your lifestyle to me seemed so tragic/With the thrill of it all".

Love this. Aleister Crowley, a practitioner of ‘magick’ (as he spelled it) and he called himself the Beast 666. Other Crowley sites are The Golden Dawn (George’s Café) former London temple, at 36 Blythe Road, Hammersmith. And Crowley’s Flat on Jermyn Street near Piccadilly Circus where he lived in the 1940s. Go through the garden at St James’s Church Piccadilly and you are looking straight at Crowley’s old home.

The house Crowley owned on Loch Ness is called Boleskine House. He performed a month's long ritual there where he was attempting to make a demon his servant. He got called away from the ritual prematurely and didn't wind down the ceremony properly, and it's believed he left a doorway opened on that property that has never been closed. Ironically, or maybe not, immediately after that is when people started seeing The Loch Ness Monster. Ozzy got the pronunciation of his name wrong in his famous song. It's supposed to be pronounced, "CROW-LY", like HOLY. Great video, guys! Stay safe.

I visited this place years back when I started reading about Crowley and all that surrounded him. I've always found it fascinating. I think the man was onto something but his hubris, ego, and utter freedom with all the money and power made him absolutely mad and corrupted. There is a house in Kensington (and not New Orleans, haha) called the Psychic Society with many floors of info on the occult. Rare books. Some of which under lock and key ala Lovecraft. I saw Freemason symbols engraved. I got to visit the place for free at one time. It's opposite Hyde Park. Check it out.

I didn't know Aleister Crowley was a real person. I've seen several fictional depictions of him, as a type of dark wizard....For example, men named "Aleister Crowley" are villains in two anime/manga franchises that I follow. Both more capable (and also.. handsome) than the real person ... appeared to be.

Crowley was an interesting character who was a bit of a charlatan but influential in pop culture - loved character Crowley in Supernatural tv series.

Crowley was also seen by author Dennis Wheatley as a very dangerous man and was used as Basis for villain in Hammer Films classic “The devil rides our” starring Christopher Lee playing hero for a change - filming locations for this film might be a good option for future vlog.

The Crowley and Yeats story is one of those urban legends that gets passed around a lot. The story of W.B. Yeats kicking Aleister Crowley down the stairs at the Battle of Blythe Road is a complete myth. In the account given by E.A. Hunter, who was present at the time, Crowley showed up in a kilt with an Osiris mask and then got stopped by the landlord in the hall. Crowley told the landlord to get a constable, the landlord did, and the constable told Crowley to leave. Crowley left. There was no duel and no kicking down the stairs. This isn't some grand mystery. There were Golden Dawn people present who explain what happened in their journals and according to them Crowley was asked to leave and he did.

The first appearance of the stairs incident was in the article Black Magic Against White: Aleister Crowley versus W.B. Yeats, written by Richard Ellmann and published in the September 1948 edition of Partisan Review. Ellmann's story ends with Crowley choking out a vampire, but nobody ever seems to repeat that part. It's entirely a made up story that was written for basically a tabloid article.

Also that picture you flashed on the screen of Crowley had nothing to do with Blythe Road. That is the costume he wore for the Rites of Ulysses.

The german connection is The Order of The Oriental Templars, more commonly called the O.T.O. So the story goes that one of the founders of the OTO, Theodore Ruess, had read Crowley's "Book Of Lies" and exclaimed that in one of the chapters, Crowley, in his usual coded fashion, revealed the secret of secrets - the ultimate secret of Freemasonry, and as such was entitled to the IX Degree of the OTO. Of course, once Crowley got involved, he rewrote all of the OTO's rituals to give it a thelemic spin. What chapter, you may ask? Writer Robert Anton Wilson surmises it's probably chapter 69 - "The Way To Succeed And A Way To Suck Eggs" - being that the IX degree relates to sexual magic. Incidentally, the band Ministry named one of their albums after the notorious chapter.

Fun Fact..During Napoleon's campaign in Egypt its ancient culture-artifacts became a sensation and it found its way into Highgate Cemetery they just visited. Indeed going in circles counter clockwise around something is often seen as malevolent-unlucky is called Widdershins since its counter to the sunrise-sunset and reading from left to right might be why as well...🎃

Fun commentary. Aliester in my belief really felt like well, as in the movie that we are going in circles. He felt that something has to put an end to the cycle.
I feel that way also.
And from what I gather he felt there should be no binding rules on white or dark Magick. Just do it out of love.
