In 1974, the young musician's talent was discovered by Raúl Porchetto, who invited him to join a short-term project called Reino de Munt. In 1977, Lerner participated in Gustavo Santaolalla's band Soluna. In addition, Alejandro Lerner was consolitading his skills as a performer while working with well-known Argentine singers Leon Gieco and Sandra Mihanovich.
In 1981, Lerner formed a band called la Magia, playing along with bass player Hernán Magiano, guitarist Damián Figueroa, saxophonist Oscar Kreimer, and drummer Luis Querón, releasing Alejandro Lerner y La Magia in 1982. A year later, the band broke up and he decided to start his solo career, releasing Todo a Pulmón that same year and Lerner Tres in 1984.
In 1999, a compilation of his greatest hits, called 20 Años (20 Years), was released.
In 2002 Lerner gained exposure in the US when he collaborated with Carlos Santana on the song "Hoy Es Adiós" which was released on Santana's album Shaman.

Él se ha ido a trabajar
No me ha escrito en mucho tiempo
Él dijo que volverá
Pero el tiempo pasó
No preguntes porque
Él ya no regresó a nuestro hogar
La frontera marcó
Su destino final
Y a mis brazos jamás volvió
Y a mis brazos jamás volvió
Hoy es adiós
Mañana quizás
Sé que tu vas a volver
Hoy es adiós
Mañana quizás
No hay fronteras en nuestro querer
The song "Hoy Es Adiós" by Alejandro Lerner & Santana is a heart-wrenching ballad about a man who left with the winter to work, promising to return to his loved one. The singer has not received any letter from him for a long time but still believes that he will come back. However, as time passes by, she begins to feel the pain of his absence and wonders why he hasn't returned yet. The man's destiny was marked by the border, and he didn't return to their home. Even after all this, the singer hopes that he will return someday, as there are no boundaries in their love.
The song is profound in its simplicity, but it highlights the pain of separation and the hope that remains even when time passes. The sadness in the singer's voice is palpable, and the sound of Santana's guitar only enriches the melody's emotional quality. The lyrics suggest that love transcends borders and while their time together has ended for now, they will be reunited soon.
