The songs for her album, 'The Pirate’s Gospel', were written on a trip to Europe. They were recorded in her father’s studio and were initially self-released in 2004, in paper and lace sleeves with hand lettering. The album was issued in revised form by Holocene Music in October 2006, and received widespread critical acclaim.
A new song, "Dry Grass and Shadows", was issued on a compilation of Nevada City artists, and five more new songs were issued on a limited-edition 10" vinyl pressing, Songs Whistled Through White Teeth, released in the UK in October 2006. The Pirate's Gospel was released in the UK on Names Records in April 2007, garnering favorable reviews in The Times and NME.
Alela Diane has toured in the USA both solo and with Tom Brosseau, and has also opened for the Decemberists, Akron/Family and Vashti Bunyan. She performed in the UK in April and August 2007. According to a relatively recent interview, her second album is to be expected shortly. She now lives in Nevada City, California.
She toured Europe (UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany) in March, April and May 2008.

Your singing carried me through the mountains of BC , from Vancouver to The prairies, a 27 hour bus ride, I had gotten stranded at the bus station off the ferry from Victoria, slept in the bus depo ,but got kicked out at 3a,m , downtown Vancouver, stood like a horse under a streetlight by the trees , sleep standing half waking. I had a trigger on the island , relapsed ptsd " caused by a two year long lsd trip from a overboard overdose " .. needless to say . An interesting trip home . Unable to describe on such a venue, but through the hell I was in , your singing was heaven sent . The haunted melodies, matched my haunted spirit . . In a strange way . I miss those sorts of times intensely. Like James Taylor said " I'd have to be some sort of natural born fool , to wanna pass that way again " , well maybe I'm a bit if one .
But no fooling! You've a magic voice . Your singing , your music , lyrics .. was such a gift to find , in such strange times .
Thankyou . You spoke to my soul. The pain and the terror of it , for a time . Fell into wonder and silent awe instead .
Many years later now , feels like . I've come a long long way since then . But I keep all the best parts of my life , the joy and struggles . Close .
Your music will always be a piece of the magic of my strange and hard to articulate life .

I listen to this song and the first thing that comes to mind is a cabin in the woods, snow-covered conifers, a fire in the fireplace and sitting in an armchair having a hot chocolate while a snowstorm falls outside.
