Chilton said in the September 1994 issue of Guitar Player that he considers himself a "musical performer, not a songwriter" and that some of his songs sound only "half-baked" to him. Nonetheless, his compositions have been performed by a number of artists, including Teenage Fanclub, This Mortal Coil, The Bangles, Wilco, Graham Coxon, Garbage, Tom Bradbury, Son Volt, Counting Crows, Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Superdrag, Evan Dando, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Placebo, Xiu Xiu, and His Name Is Alive. The Replacements wrote the song Alex Chilton in his honor on their 1987 Pleased to Meet Me album, produced by Jim Dickinson in Memphis.
On March 17, 2010, Alex Chilton died of an apparent heart attack in a hospital in New Orleans. He was 59.
In the Street
Alex Chilton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The same old thing we did last week
Not a thing to do
But talk to you
Steal your car and bring it down
Pick me up, we'll drive around
Wish we had
Bust a street light
Out past midnight
Hanging out, down the street
The same old thing we did last week
Not a thing to do
But talk to you
Alex Chilton's song "In the Street" from his album "Like Flies on Sherbert" captures the youth culture and the boredom that they experience in their daily lives. The lyrics describe hanging out with friends with nothing to do but talk and cruise around in stolen cars, wishing they had a joint to make things more interesting. The reckless behavior of breaking a street light after midnight perfectly illustrates the youthful desire to rebel and do what they want without consequences.
The line "The same old thing we did last week" highlights the monotony of teenage life and the need for something exciting to happen. This need for excitement drives the desire to steal a car and cause mischief, making them feel alive and invincible. The chorus "Not a thing to do, but talk to you" acknowledges that the cure for boredom is the company of friends and the endless conversations that come with it, even if it means doing the same old thing every week.

This was Big Star's only network appearance. Alex knew this was it, and he nailed it...the guitar solo...everything.
