Chilton said in the September 1994 issue of Guitar Player that he considers himself a "musical performer, not a songwriter" and that some of his songs sound only "half-baked" to him. Nonetheless, his compositions have been performed by a number of artists, including Teenage Fanclub, This Mortal Coil, The Bangles, Wilco, Graham Coxon, Garbage, Tom Bradbury, Son Volt, Counting Crows, Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Superdrag, Evan Dando, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Placebo, Xiu Xiu, and His Name Is Alive. The Replacements wrote the song Alex Chilton in his honor on their 1987 Pleased to Meet Me album, produced by Jim Dickinson in Memphis.
On March 17, 2010, Alex Chilton died of an apparent heart attack in a hospital in New Orleans. He was 59.

Let's get lost, lost in each other's arms
Let's get lost, let them send out alarms
And though they'll think us rather rude
Let's tell the world we're in that crazy mood
Let's defrost, in a romantic mist
Let's get crossed, off everybody's list
Darling, let's get lost
Let's get lost in a romantic mist
Let's get crossed, off everybody's list
To celebrate this night we found each other
Darling, let's get lost
The lyrics to Alex Chilton's song "Let's Get Lost" convey a sense of intense intimacy and escapism from the rest of the world. The repeated refrain, "let's get lost," suggests that the singer wants to abandon all sense of responsibility and obligation, and simply exist in the moment with their lover. The lines "let them send out alarms / and though they'll think us rather rude" indicate a willingness to disregard societal norms and expectations in order to pursue their desires, while the phrase "to celebrate this night we found each other" suggests that the relationship is relatively new and exciting.
The lyrics are evocative of the jazz age and the glamorous, hedonistic lifestyle associated with it. The repetition of the phrase "let's get lost" conjures up images of smoke-filled nightclubs, dimly-lit streets, and clandestine meetings, all of which contribute to the sense of illicit excitement present in the song. The reference to being "crossed off everybody's list" suggests a desire to rebel against convention and tradition and embrace a more free-spirited approach to life.
