I had to call, I hope it's not too late
You're just on my mind I don't need anything
It feels like tomorrow's just too far away, yeah
Baby, paint a picture so it feels like I'm with ya
Don't leave out a single thing
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone?
Drinkin' white or drinkin' red?
Am I running though your head?
And did you change out of your clothes?
Do you want a night alone?
And baby, if you don't
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone, honey
You could be right here in twenty
Let's not put this on hold
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone?
Oh, oh, oh yeah
You fill my mind with curiosity
Tryin' to fill all of this space between
Yeah, I got an empty pillow next to me
I bet waking up next to you is a sight to see
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone?
Are you curled up in your bed?
Drinkin' white or drinkin' red?
Am I running though your head?
And did you change out of your clothes?
Do you want a night alone?
And baby, if you don't
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone, honey
You could be right here in twenty
Let's not put this on hold
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone?
Baby, paint a picture so it feels like I'm with ya
Don't leave out a single thing
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone?
Are you curled up in your bed?
Drinkin' white or drinkin' red?
Am I running though your head?
And did you change out of your clothes?
Do you want a night alone?
And baby, if you don't
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone, honey
You could be right here in twenty
Let's not put this on hold
What are you doin' on the other end of the phone?
Mmhmm, yeah
In Alex Hall's song "Other End of the Phone," the singer expresses his desire to be close to his love interest, despite not physically being with her. He begins by acknowledging that he saw her just the day before but still feels the need to call her. He asks her to describe her current situation to him, whether she's drinking wine or in bed, and wonders if he's on her mind as she is on his. He then suggests that she could be with him in twenty minutes, hinting at the possibility of him wanting to see her in person.
Throughout the song, the singer reveals the emptiness he feels when she's not around him; he has an "empty pillow next to [him]," which implies he's lonely at night. He then goes on to ask her to paint a picture of what she's doing, perhaps to feel closer to her in a way. The song's poetic approach is intended to express the connection between two people, even when they're physically apart.
The song's lyrics emphasize the power of technology to bring people together, despite distance. It's a relatable situation to many long-distance couples who rely on video calls to stay connected. In summary, "Other End of the Phone" captures the bittersweet gambit of connecting with someone while you're not able to be there.
