The road to fame started for Parks when her father submitted an impromptu application to the BBC's Fame Academy. She won the contest, and was given the opportunity to showcase her self-penned song "Maybe That's What It Takes" to a public audience. The song was released on 17th November 2003 and peaked at number 3 in the UK Top 40 the following week. Her debut album Introduction was subsequently released and sold over 500,000 copies
Parks went quiet for a long time, amid rumours that she had quit the industry, but returned late in 2005 with an acclaimed album entitled "Honesty". Unlike her previous album, everything on here consisted of her own work, something which she had been wanting ever since the Fame Academy days. Unfortunately, due to poor publicity and distribution issues this album did not reach as wide an audience as she may have liked.
Tainted Love

Run away, I've got to
Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love
Now I know I've got to
Run away, I've got to
Get away, you don't really want any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you think love is to pray
But I'm sorry, I don't pray that way
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love
Don't touch me, please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm gonna pack my things and go
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love (oh)
Touch me, baby, tainted love
Touch me, baby, tainted love
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love (oh)
Tainted love
Tainted love
The lyrics of Alex Parks’ “Tainted Love” focus on the pain and difficulties that come with being in a tainted or toxic romantic relationship. The singer expresses a sense of feeling trapped and unable to escape the overwhelming pain caused by her partner. She talks about having lost her light and being unable to sleep, due to the emotional pain. Despite the love that they share, the relationship seems to be going nowhere, and the singer feels the need to run away.
The chorus of the song reflects the struggle of trying to make a toxic relationship work. The singer decides to run from her partner due to the tainted love that he has given her. She is willing to give everything that she can to make it work, including her tears, but it still isn't enough. The relationship has become tainted, and the love shared is no longer pure. The singer sees that the only way to make things right is to end things and walk away.
The last lines of the song reinforce the sentiment of wanting to leave a damaging relationship behind, with the singer declaring that they cannot stand the way their partner teases and hurts them. The repetition of the phrase “tainted love” throughout the song emphasizes the impact that being in a toxic relationship can have on a person. Overall, the song speaks to the struggles and complexities of love and relationships, sometimes leading to heartbreak and the need to move on.
