Jump
Alex Van Halen/David Lee Roth/Eddie Van Halen/Michael Anthony Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I get up, and nothing gets me down.
You got it tough. I've seen the toughest around.
And I know, baby, just how you feel.
You've got to roll with the punches to get to what's real

Oh can't you see me standing here,
I've got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen.
Oh can't you see what I mean?

Might as well jump. Jump!
Might as well jump.
Go ahead, and jump. Jump!
Go ahead, andjump.

Aaa-ohh hey you! Who said that?
Baby how you been?
You say you don't know, you won't know
until we begin.

Well can't you see me standing here,
I've got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen.
Oh can't you see what I mean?

Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and, jump.
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and, jump.

Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and, jump.

Get it and jump. Jump!
Go ahead and, jump.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Jump" by Van Halen are all about taking risks and facing the fear of the unknown. The opening lines suggest that the singer has been knocked down, but they refuse to stay there, instead choosing to get back up and keep going. The second line reassures the listener that they are not alone in facing adversity, and that the singer has seen others going through equally difficult times. The line "roll with the punches to get to what's real" emphasizes the importance of resilience and staying strong in the face of challenges, as it is only through perseverance that one can find true success and happiness.

The chorus of the song encourages the listener to take a leap of faith - to "jump" into the unknown and embrace whatever may come. The repeated use of the phrase "Might as well jump" suggests that there is nothing to lose in taking risks, and that the rewards of doing so might be great. The second verse brings in a second person, who is hesitant to take the leap into the unknown. The singer reassures them that they will never know what they're missing until they try, and encourages them to take the plunge and jump into the unknown.

Overall, the lyrics of "Jump" are all about taking risks, living life to the fullest, and not being held back by fear. The song urges listeners to embrace the unknown and jump into whatever may come their way, reminding them that the only real failure is not trying at all.

It would be neat to see Wolf, Mike, Dave, Sam, Gary and Alex do a celebration of the VH catalog in a live setting. Obviously Wolf can play Eddie parts if he wanted to and probably knows a bunch of the guitar parts being in the band already. That would be cool, but ultimately it's up to Alex and Wolf...

leave Dave out.. After what Mike just said i would never buy the concert ticket. Get the dude from Steel Panther to do Dave's parts. Gary never had the VH vibe. Wolf on Guitar! would be the way to go.

I've been an ardent fan of Van Halen ever since I bought their debut album and first saw them in 1978. They opened for Black Sabbath who had a hard time following them at Lewisham Odeon in London the same year. I want to remember them when they were at their best!! Those days have gone but the music will live on. The VH legacy is tremendous, keep it that way. Mind you, saying that, I'd love to see here in England a young talented tribute act who could replicate a VH performance from their heyday - nostalgia's ok - ain't it?

God Bless, Alex. I can’t imagine the pain he’s dealing with from losing Edward. I hope he continues to heal. I definitely agree with Michael; It’s entirely Alex’s call to move forward to pay tribute to Edward.

Mr. Michael Anthony is always a class act. Two things you can count on in life, the sun rising in the east and setting in the west .....and Michael Anthony giving an intelligent and classy interview.

It’s over , just enjoy what Van Halen left us with music and memories. If Alex one day feels like doing something I’m sure everyone will feel privileged to listen.
