Hearsay
Alexander O'Neal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come here girlfriend

Spreadin' on my name all over town

Hearsay, it's nothin' but hearsay
Because a lie's not the thruth
Until you can prove it
Where'd you get that information from ?
Baby, somebody's steering you wrong
They want to break up our happy home, home

It's nothing but hearsay
That's causing your heartache
Because a lie's not the truth
Unless you're believin'

So they bring up all the thing I've done
When they need someone to pin it on
They point the finger in my direction

This time it's nothing but hearsay, you woman
It's nothin' but hearsay
Because a lie's not the truth
Unless you can prove it

It's nothing but hearsay
It's never that easy
Because a lie's not the truth
Unless you're believin'

Oh, do you prove it baby ?
It's hearsay
I don't want to talk about no hearsay
Oh, don't bring me no hearsay

The love that we've found
Oh, I'm gonna be around
I want you, you want me
And together we will be love of hearsay

Oh, little woman yeah, hearsay
Ooh, then I get you down, hearsay
Oh, we're mad in love
(Love's gonna last)
Ooh, I am in your class

Girl, I gotta have your love
I wanne be in your arms

Hearsay baby, hearsay
Hearsay baba

Overall Meaning

The song "Hearsay" by Alexander O'Neal is about a man who is being falsely accused of cheating on his partner. In the first verse, the man confronts his girlfriend who is spreading rumors about him all over town. He tells her that it's just hearsay, meaning that it's nothing but gossip and there's no truth to it unless she can prove it. The man questions where she got the information from and thinks someone is trying to break up their happy home by spreading lies.

In the second verse, the man explains that people always point the finger at him when something goes wrong. He tells his girlfriend that it's just hearsay and there's no truth to it unless she believes it. He begs her not to bring him any more hearsay and reaffirms his love for her, saying that they will be the "love of hearsay".

The song employs a catchy and upbeat melody that contrasts with the serious message of the lyrics. It's a cautionary tale about believing rumors and the damage they can cause to relationships. At the same time, it's a love song that celebrates the power of true love over false accusations.

Probably one of the best songs I've EVER heard in my life. Still, after all these years, I just can't stop listening to it. And yes...this song really has a huge "sing along"-factor.

@wpochert

I remember it from the summer that album dropped... one of my all time favorite records.. every track is great as are the interludes .. Jam and Lewis just could do no wrong for a very long time <3
