This is perhaps the most ecstatic waltz ever written. For me, no one has ever approached Sofronitsky here. Grosvenor plays beautifully but misses the ecstasy and abandon. That's the problem with so many performances today, they don't take enough risks and I fear that if someone did play like this now the perfection brigade would denigrate it. We live in an era where performance is too steamlined. Perhaps this is because life is much less of a struggle in the West between life and death. Sofrontsky lived through two World Wars. He plays as if his life depended on this music; in fact, his life did depend on this music, there is no 'as if'. There is raw emotional candour here that exposes the tragic undertow. It is uncomfortable to listen to at first; it is not beautified, it is simply true.

100% right. Запад и Восток, как два полюса. West and East like two poles...

Bozhanov's live rendition is worth checking out, it's jaw dropping.

I do feel many modern pianists play this piece brilliantly, however within their ‘comfort zone’ and for me this Sofronitsky version just has so much more meaning compared to beautiful notes which run the risk of being somewhat empty... I listen to this over and over again and every time I find something new... his soundscape is simply amazing... how he makes us feel, and it’s still fresh...

@Art Palmer Art I agree with much of what you say. It is tragically beautiful. But it is not beautified as so many performances . My own rather pessimistic view of life is that beauty is indeed truth and that truth includes tragedy. As Virginia Woolf said: ' death is woven in with the violets'.

For me, Sofronitsky’s music is absolute perfection in how sublime it always is. In my own recording of Scriabin piano music I take risks too, totally inspired by Sofronitsky ... even though there is a long way to go yet, but 10 days ago I have just started recording all the Scriabin solo piano music, writing poems to each piece, hopefully publish books/CDs in time as 150th birthday present for my favourite composer at the 2022 Scriabin festival I wish to organise for New Zealand!

it is true that Scriabin's ideas must have been reflected closest by sofronistky. in my studies of the piano repertoire - a russian teacher i had that knew richter , ashkenazy, davidovic as classmates ,and studied with samuel feinberg primarily, at times brought me to a VERY old lady - russian pianist, writer, painter, in her tiny little apartment - to play for her . SHE knew scriabin as a child and growing up..and confirmed certain styles that are prominent in sofronitsky's.

Sofronitsky, so far the best! Every single note, every single breath, it's a metaphysic lecture... that's not only about piano playing

Sofronitsky, what an interpreter. Scriabin, what a man.
