Lubimov studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Heinrich Neuhaus and Lew Naumov. After successes in several competitions, he went on to give the first Soviet performances of a number of pieces by composers such as Schoenberg, Stockhausen, Boulez, and Ligeti. Lubimov's commitment to western music was heavily criticised by the Soviet authorities, and he was prevented from leaving the Soviet Union for several years, during which time he concentrated on working with period instruments. He is a founder of the Moscow Baroque Quartet and the Moscow Chamber Academy (with Tatiana Grindenko).
Apart from giving solo recitals throughout the world and appearing with leading symphony orchestras, Lubimov works regularly with early music ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Among his partners in chamber music are Andreas Staier, Natalia Gutman, Peter Schreier, Heinrich Schiff, Christian Tetzlaff, Gidon Kremer, Ivan Monighetti, and Wieland Kuijken. His numerous recordings include piano duets with Andreas Staier on Teldec, and a much-heralded recording of the complete Mozart piano sonatas (on fortepiano) on Erato.

Wspaniale!

Congratulations to this excellent pianist for his skill and his courage. The dictatorship must never find space in any country. The dictatorship can delude a part of the people into thinking that it is a good way of life but no one can be truly happy without freedom of thought and expression (freedom of speech, political thought, artistic expression), without respect for personal dignity and, often, of one's life.

@Kevin Ibach I do agree with your statement!

@Marianna GK Wikipedia is what it is. I'm inquiring if you know any different. This pianist is no stranger to controversy in Russia, and he may have been giving an antiwar concert. I don't know. What belies the bomb threat explanation is the exuberance of the audience response to the pianist finishing his Schubert Impromptu. It suggested they didn't believe that a bomb threat was the real reason the police were there. I notice that you have responded to a number of posts about this topic. I can still be a proud Canadian, and yet criticize things Canadians do, or things the Canadian government does. Same with being a Russian ...it doesn't make you less of one to criticize your country, or to be accepting of people when they criticize your home country.

This performance is an art work in it self. Authorities trying to stop him but the music can’t be stopped. Best performance ever seen.
