Where Does It Hurt
Alexz Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where does it hurt.
Tell me 'cause I understand the words of a heart.
Beating like winds in my hand.
We can hide.
We'll never lie.
I'll always see into you.

There's nothing wrong with coming up empty and cold.
Staying too long and try to change rocks into gold.

I've been there too.
I've wasted myself.
And you were there for me.
So whenever you crash, wherever you lay, that's where I'll be.

And for every endless midnight, there's a sky full of broken star.
And there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.

Where does it hurt.
When you open your heart there's always so much to lose.
So far to fall and no where to go when it's true.

But if you let me in, I won't let you down. Put your faith in me.

'Cause whenever you crash, wherever you lay, that's where I'll be.
And for every endless midnight, there's a sky full of broken star.
And there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
And there's a million streets to walk down, in this city of broken hearts.
But there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
Where does it hurt.
Where does it hurt.

And for every endless midnight, there's a sky full of broken star.
And there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
And there's a million streets to walk down, in this city of broken hearts.
But there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
Where does it hurt.

Where does it hurt.
Where does it hurt.

Overall Meaning

The song "Where Does It Hurt" by Alexz Johnson is a powerful ballad that explores the struggles of love and heartbreak. The song's lyrics ask where the pain and hurt of a broken heart reside, and offers reassurance to the listener that they are not alone in their suffering. Johnson's emotive vocals are accompanied by a soft piano melody that creates a sense of intimacy.

The chorus emphasizes the support and comfort that the singer is willing to offer to their loved one. They acknowledge the fear of opening one's heart and the risk of potential loss, but offer to be there through the good and the bad. The line "put your faith in me" emphasizes that the singer is trustworthy and committed to helping their loved one heal.

The verse that reads, "There's nothing wrong with coming up empty and cold. Staying too long and try to change rocks into gold" shows that sometimes a relationship can go sour, and there's no harm in admitting that it's not working out. The singer empathises with their loved one, as they've been there themselves, and they want to be a constant source of support through thick and thin.

Listening in 2021 because I’m going through it, but these songs from Instant Star will always be pure magic. This one is by far the standout from the show and my absolute favorite. I hope everyone is doing well 🖤

This is the song that got me into both Instant Star, and Alexz, and it was by accident. I used to go on The N a lot to play games, and this song came on, I guess to promote Instant Star (which we didn't have in England), and it just spoke to me, the lyrics, the emotion, everything. I was going through a really tough time in my life and this song was my soundtrack and really helped me through it all. It always has a place in my heart.
