After a successful career in his native United Kingdom in both silent films and early talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood. In 1956 he became an American citizen while retaining his British citizenship. Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades. He remains one of the most popular and most recognised filmmakers of all time. His image has endured partly due to cameo appearances in his own films and the series of television dramas he hosted, the eponymous Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Now we're talking! I'm gonna love this series.

On a side note, while I can understand why some may take issue with The Exoricst, I think it is also a very religious movie. The author of the book, William Peter Blatty, was a devout Catholic. Yes, there is blasphemy in the film, but it is done while Reagan (the little girl) is under demonic possession. The film does not sugarcoat demons and devils like a lot of media does, and should he commended for it.
And of course, in the end, good ultimately triumphs over evil, through Father Karras' act of self-sacrifice.

I’ve seen 8 1/2 twice in my life, and was mesmerized by its weirdness. I will watch it gladly a third time, keeping your comments in mind. And I look forward to your discussion of My Dinner With Andre. I saw it as a young woman and described it then as the most boring movie I ever saw. I hope you can add some insights to this film. Perhaps I might be tempted to give it another look!

Thank God for this video. It spoke so many of the things I knew, but couldn’t voice. Filmmakers like Fellini and Bresson helped me convert to Catholicism during college

Great video - as an Italian and a big fan of Fellini, I’m so happy that you chose 8 1/2 to get this series started! Can’t wait for the next ones. Glad you mentioned “Rocky”, because, as a movie that had an immense impact on global culture, it has a very dark core message of “if you don’t make it, you’re worth nothing”. Looking forward to that episode.

I remember Saturday nights watching a PBS program with movie critics Syskel & Ebert, which had a point-counterpoint format. They were passionate about the art form, and critiqued films of every genre,the hosts assigning a simple Thumb up or down. It was a great show. Inspired us to go see some movies, and forewarned us about really bad ones. The "clunker" reviews were very funny. Looking forward to your insights, opinions and guidance in this important art field.

The "Legion of Decency" sounds like it was a great idea on paper and easily went overboard in practice. I've never seen 8 1/2 but I would watch it just because you described it as thought provoking.
Constructive Criticism: I am really looking forward to where this series goes! I think it will be easier to watch if there's a bit less "man talking in a chair." The content is brilliant, I'm only suggesting tweaking the delivery.

I recently watched a wonderful movie from 2016 entitled The Park Bench. It was warm, funny, insightful and endearing and a full range of Gospel values was on clear display. I’m thinking this would be a perfect movie to include in one of your episodes. I am so looking forward to this program. I gladly applaud this series of reflections on popular movies. In my book BEING ON FIRE: THE TOP TEN ESSENTIALS OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH, I link the experience of movies to sacraments ("Signs that achieve in human hearts and lives what they signify to human minds" - Brian Daley, S.J.). See pp. 123-127. In some ways, movies are functioning as scripture for many people today. Many can quote movie lines, but draw a blank at the mention of the prodigal son, or don't realize the title of the movie Lilies of the Field is from the bible. Looking forward to other presentations by Andrew Petiprin.

I’ve received my bachelor’s degree in Television, Film and Media Studies from CSU Los Angeles a few years ago, and right now I’m working in a field completely different than what I went to school for. I’ve worked on a few films here and there, but right now I’m kinda at a stall and stopped just working in my current job unrelated to filmmaking.

@Nick if you get a chance, do watch it. It really is an incredible achievement. Only one professional actor who played Jesus. Other parts played by people who had never acted at all; St Peter, played by a truck driver, but it works and boy does it work.

Fascinating intro to the series. As a film studies undergrad a few years ago I actually wrote my honors thesis on Fellini's relationship with the Catholic Church. Otto e Mezzo and the tension between its initial condemnation by the Legion of Decency (which was a distinctly American arm of the Church) with the Vatican's best film list. A very ironic showing of how church attitudes change. Ironically, the Legion of Decency didn't even bother to condemn La Dolce Vita, which was much more scandalous among Catholics in Italy.
