In 1939, Newman began a twenty-one year career as music director for 20th Century-Fox Studios. He composed the familiar fanfare which accompanies the studio logo at the beginning of Fox's productions. At Fox, he also developed what came to be known as the Newman System, a means of synchronising the performance and recording of a musical score with the film. The system is still in use today.
He was the head of a family of major Hollywood film composers including his son, Thomas Newman, who is currently active. Other notable Newman family members include his brothers, Lionel Newman and Emil Newman, and his nephew, the singer/songwriter Randy Newman.
He received 45 Academy Award nominations (a record in the music categories, now shared with John Williams), winning 9 times.

"How the West Was Won," (1962) is a film that many people today would find rather offensive due to its sugarcoating of American history. On a technical level, the movie is notable for being one of only two feature films that was shot exclusively with the three lens, Cinerama camera. Upon the theatrical release the movie would require three special projectors in order to display the film onto a huge curved screen which was designed to give the audience an immersive viewing experience. The only other movie to ever be exclusively filmed in this format was "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" which was also released in 1962. Due to the enormous expense and technical difficulties in using the Cinerama process, it was quickly abandoned in favor of Super Panavision 70 which required only one projector. However as time went on, the novelty of the curved Cinerama screens eventually wore off on audiences, and the format was soon phased out of theaters almost entirely.
