In 1939, Newman began a twenty-one year career as music director for 20th Century-Fox Studios. He composed the familiar fanfare which accompanies the studio logo at the beginning of Fox's productions. At Fox, he also developed what came to be known as the Newman System, a means of synchronising the performance and recording of a musical score with the film. The system is still in use today.

He was the head of a family of major Hollywood film composers including his son, Thomas Newman, who is currently active. Other notable Newman family members include his brothers, Lionel Newman and Emil Newman, and his nephew, the singer/songwriter Randy Newman.

He received 45 Academy Award nominations (a record in the music categories, now shared with John Williams), winning 9 times.

"Another example of how music can make a movie"-----DOLRED

I hate to be argumentative but...

The concept of this film transcends filmkaking or scoring or casting. This film was intended to reveal the very essence not only of the nation that developed on this land but of the very land itself.

Some people come here because they believe they'll be on "easy street" but it's not. North America has more tornadoes in a year than the entire rest of hte world.

This is a harsh land demanding much of the people who would inhabit it.

It's very nature infected the filmmaker, the cast and yes the musician who scored the film They were all possessed by the essence of this land as were the people who came here and did what had to be done to make a nation worthy of this land. There is no separating the elements of this film. It's holographic.

When I hear that theme I stand and I raise my arms to embrace this land. I face to the four winds. I know I'm not worthy to l ive here but I bitterly cling to my opportunity to try to survive and thrive here anyway. It's more moving than any other spiritual experience I've ever had. I've had an out-of--body experience near the Missouri River. I've seen the creepiest/eeriest thing I've ever seen there. Every time this land has challenged me I've survived it ( so far ) and that means more to me than being the Emperor of any other land you could name.

I've walked it's alpine trails and I've crawled through it's very bowels having to hold my head up over my shoulder to breath because the hole I was crawling through had water up to the top few inches.

When I was a child a buffalo was something from a book. Now I can go to a park near me and be right in their very midst. I used to visit a farm wher e there were buffalo/cow hybrids and I experience the awe and respect due them and I kept my distance.

When I was a child you had to go "out west" to see an eagle. Now I've seen one from my suburban back yard.

When I was a child the creek near my home was an open sewer. Since then I've seen the belted kingfisher and the herons cavorting in that creek. I've seen the shad flash where formerly only brown algae and pond snails dwelt.

This is a great and demanding land and it requires great people to dwell in it properly. I'm not worthy I know that but at least I realize how fortunate I was to have been born here and to see it and experience it on a visceral/full-immersion level.

The concept of this land and this film made to attempt to depict it's essence possessed all who participated in this great cinemagrahic work of art and that's how that music got so fantastic. The experiences this land had given to all who participated rose up in them and they all did their due dilegence and the result was superp and is superp and will stand the test of time.

May this land bless us and keep us and not find us lukewarm and spit us out. I humbly thank this land for allowing me to breathe it's air, walk it's ground and see it's skies. If I can't honor it by being worthy of it at least I can sing it's praises.

Nobody should come or remain here who does not love it.

When I was in the fifth grade, our class piled into a school bus and drove to Hollywood, Calif., specifically to the Warner Cinerama Theater. We filed into the theater and sat in the first row, which was about 30 feet from the Cinerama curved screen which was almost as big as an IMAX screen. When this sound track opened on the huge stereo speakers, we were totally blown away! That was in 1962 and I remember it clearly today. Amazing movie.

I’m 14 now. when i ask my grandpa to watch it with me he chuckles and calls me an old soul. but if they had masterpieces like this and other favorites of mine (laurel & hardy, sound of music, singing in the rain, etc) i’m happy to be an old soul ❤

Enjoy every minute with your gramps, nobody knows how long it will go on that way. I watch so many great Hollywood classics esp Western with my dad every Saturday when we take him to us, and of course this movie, too. After a fatal brain stroke last year my beloved dad died in March this year at the age of 90 and i have tears in my eyes everytime i hear these Western scores (this, Comancheros, Alamo, El Dorado etc). But now its December and i still cant watch Westerns now. Same with my elder brother, he was a huge fan of Gene Kelly and we loved to watch his movies, but after my brother died 20 yrs ago its hard for me to enjoy Gene Kelly movies, in the last 20 yrs i hadnt watch his fav again, Singing in the rain. So God bless your Gramps and i hope you have many years of joy together before you.

Everything about this film is epic. The story, the filming, the locations, the greatest actors of the 20th century. And, of course, the music. I was about 10 years old when my dad took us to the "Cinerama" in Seattle to watch it. Ok, it wasn't IMAX, but it was pretty awesome at the time. The movie begins with an overture that includes variations on the theme and also some great American folk songs. Then, in true epic form, the intro starts and about 10 seconds into it those fabulous French horns explode! When I started junior high not too long after hearing this, I joined the band and played horn all the way through the rest of my school days. Newman was a movie score genius. You can hear the influence of this piece in Western movie scores from this point on, including Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles (Brooks wrote the theme). If you haven't seen How the West was Won, you need to, it's a spectacular accomplishment in filmmaking.

Hahahaha, me too!!! I saw it at about the same age in a big cinerama theater in Honolulu, those big screens with the wrap-around edges so you felt encased in the movie! Oh man, you could almost see around the corners! Yeah, I got swept up in the story, the filming in such grand locations and of course the music weaving it all together. This is the movie that inspired me to become the lyricist I am today. I've always wanted to write lyrics to this so maybe it's time. I've written lyrics to several John Barry movie themes (none recorded, yet). Movie music is the most inspiring for me because of all the different levels of stimulation. Yeah, I feel too that cinerama was the precursor to IMAX. Time to hit my Youtube button!

I too experienced this stunning film at the Seattle (*Martin's then) Cinerama 3 strip projector presentation ! What a joy to behold on the Cineram's pre-Imax enormous screen and the music and sound track so alive (six channel stereo - WOWZER in 1963 when HTWWW played in Setattle)! I "dove under my seat at the buffallo stampeded AND FELT i COULD COUGH UP DUST ! Seattle is so blessed to have had this Cerama franchise for os long, And it is STILL showing state of the art movie presentation over SIXTY years later !

My father was one of the sound engineers brought in for the premiere at cinerama dome. He took me with him. I was 6 at that time. This will always in my mind be one of the great movie theme compositions of all time.

What an undeniable RUSH! Those three unapologetic pitches that so inspired, “This Old Man”, to become a music teacher! I’d been taken by my parents from our hometown of Lincoln, NE all the way to Omaha (65 whole miles), to take in the new Cinerama movie, and even to this day, as a 72yo retired music aficionado, hearing that decades old theme instantly flings me back 60+ years in time! What magical mystery is MUSIC. No idea why or how it burrowed into my head this particular morning out here on the NW Oregon coast as we begin our 2023 Memorial Day weekend, but I DO KNOW, that without music, “THIS old man’s”, life would never have come to pass. I remember our family going to the Cooper Cinerama in Denver, Colorado in 1962 to see this. It was our big family night out, and we got all gussied up in our best clothes. We went out to dinner, and then to the movies. It still brings tears to my eyes. The opening music is still one of the best themes ever written. I just got the Blu-Ray, which has both the original "smilebox" Cinerama picture, and the widescreen version, both lovingly remastered for the best sound and picture I've seen since that day in 1962. WOW! Highly recommended!

How the West Was Won came at a time when films were an event, a night out, something that really was a special occasion. There were intermissions, overtures, dressing up in suits and ties. Those days are gone, like the old west. But, to hear that triumphant score by Alfred Newman immediately brings images to mind of a time past – adventure, a wide-open country, friends and enemies at every turn.

I was 22 when I saw this movie in 1962 in Glasgow, I still love the movie and the soundtrack, those days you went dressed in a suit shirt and tie, I think life was more equal then and most of the people were working, what a change to life today everyone has so many material goods and their still not as happy as we were back then, most of the stars of the movie have all gone now although Carol Baker is still around at 88, I bought the DVD and put it on now and again.

Believe it! It was a gross insult to musical intelligence for members of the Academy to pass right by Alfred Newman's monumental score in favor of John Addison's fanciful offering for the 17th century sex-romp "Tom Jones."

Just can speculate but I guess it had something to do with the corrected view about the colonisation of the North American continent. The picture about the Native Americans was in the change already back then towards the reconstructed stand we have today. So some in the Jury might have thought the film outdated and backwards looking, even though it was a major success world wide and this has overshadowed the decission about the main theme.

I saw this in Cinerama in 1962 and it was the most exciting film experience of my life. I was ten years old and on that day, a lifelong love of cinema began. The score brings back so many great memories of sitting in that theater, immersed in the tremendous imagery, sound, and technical wonder.

Thanks. I went to the Cinema or Pictures three times a week. My favourite film was Lawrence of Arabia. Could this magnificent film be made today. No. Only using CGG. No comparison. Also theatres were full. The splendid buildings were a treat to visit. I was lucky to meet Peter O Toole. A wicked sense of humour.

I am 16 years old and I have seen lots of movies but somehow I always come back to the old ones. They are by far the best; and the actors are phenomenal, like John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Cary Grant, Errol Flynn ect. Yup, I am a very much oldies fan.

The biggest Western of all times...my dad is a big fan from Westerns and so i am happy that we watch this movie on my 69 " 4 k flat TV...
He never saw this movie before and he was really impressed (bec he is a big fan from Jimmy Stewart).
My Dad is 89 yrs old and i didnt know how many movies can watch together...

After a hard brain stroke and many other health problems my dad lays in a special home now and we all expect his passing away every day.
Its hard to know that we never will watch his beloved Westerns, John Wayne, James Stewart etc again, but i am happy that we watched this movie together. But i am very sad and have tears in my eyes to hear this music and realise its all over now.
Same with all his and my favourite movies and music like Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments etc...
When he will pass i will remember our Saturday movie time for the rest of my life.

When I first saw this movie, as a young person, and heard this music, I was totally blown away and really proud to be an American, this was our history, this was my history, as my relatives came across the country on the Oregon Trail in the 1840s!! But decades later, I'm 76 now, I realized that how the west was won, was the genocide of the Native Americans and their culture!! So today, I am proud to be from an Oregon Pioneer family, but I am not so proud to be an American with Native American blood on his hands!!

One of the greatest movies ever! I've never got tired of it, in fact, just listening to this made me get my DVD out and put it on. I loaned it to an old friend several years ago and he thought it was kind of corny. Many of today's generation dismiss it as racist, (but what don't they call racist?). Regardless... I have loved this movie since I was a little kid and it is still one of my all time favorites. When ever I watch it, I am glad I was born in America!

Certainly up there with the best of Western film themes. I saw this film when it was released in the UK and shown at
the Cinerama Cinema, Old Compton Street, Soho, London - and I still recall the thrill at the size of the screen and the
power of the title music when the curtains seemed to part almost back to where I was sitting! No wonder the film
made such an impact on Kevin Costner and saw him make one of the later great Westerns: Dances With Wolves.

This music film returned me back 53 year when I was in 17 year old and I was behind the projection camera and playing this film in cinema dunia in beirut in cinerama and surrounding system hope these days will return back.

I very much wish so too. I can't understand how they have not. There was nothing ever since to compare and you would think it can't be that hard to make digital cameras and projectors to replicate the original scope..or close to it. They just need to make them more user friendly especially for directors and actors.
Certainly no problems to rebuild the screens. Most would be in storage around the world anyway.
I have a recurring dream that I'm on the hunt for all the equipment from the Auckland NZ Cinerama. I do find it (constantly) but it is in a bit of a bad state (in the dream) Shows how it got into my brain in those few short years and never came out!.
It was a mind blowing technology..

I'm right in there with John!!! I remember seeing this film 60, yes I said 60 years ago, at the Avalon Theater in Chicago as a 5th grader. It has stuck with me my entire life and just yesterday i discovered the book of the same name by Louis L'Amour, which is the original story source for the film. I actually remembered many of the words to the theme song, or at least I thought I did, and when I played the track on YouTube today I realized I had in fact carried those words and that tune with my my entire life. Funny the things we remember, and in this instance the potency of the memory was obviously due to the power and excellence of the music. And then just 2 years later the Beatles came to the Ed Sullivan Show and music took an unexpected turn to foreverness. Donald Sands

Hearing this reminds me of when I was a kid. Every year, my brother, sister and I used to take turns going over to my grandma's house and spending the night on a weekend when the Iowa State Fair was being broadcast on Iowa Public Television. This was the theme song and they always showed a video clip from the 1930s of 2 trains crashing into each other. Such great memories. Iowa Public Television just changed the theme song and entrance video for the fair this year. Not hearing it this year kinda feels like my childhood is finally over (I'm 33). Not to mention my grandma and grandpa passed way in 2020 and 2021. Gonna miss hearing this on tv every August summer.

I remember seeing HTWWW in the Cinerama Glasgow when I was 14. The memory of the 3 projectors on the huge screen and the surround sound has stayed with me ever since

Great music. For as long as I can remember Iowa Public Television (now Iowa PBS) has used this as the opening theme to their coverage of the Iowa State Fair each August. I had to Shazam the tune to find out what it was.

Dad and I went to all the epic production movies. We saw EL CID when I was eight and I had a boyhood crush watching Sophia Loren on the screen. I saw HTWWW when I was nine with that huge cast of stars and this phenomenal musical score. Mikla Rozsa and Alfred Newman were musical geniuses who MADE movies like these memorable. Great times!

Flawless score! I have the complete soundtrack. I got to see it in Cinerama when they rereleased it. I am of native and european heritage. I wish the indigenous side had been shown more accurately. they had a great opportunity here. And it wasn’t fully realized. But it is a majestic film. Amazing talent. My mom played this title in her high school band the year the film came out.and RIP Debbie Reynolds you were such a great highlight in this film.

The only movie where i must turn my head while watching on my large 70 " TV. Unfortunately the Cinerama was to difficult and too expensive, and needed special cinemals and screens. Imagine Movies like Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, Lord of the Rings or Endgame with this.

When it came out, I saw this movie when I was a child with my father. The music is all inspiring and uniquely in its own class. I play it when I work on my genealogy and reflect on the hardships my foreparents incurred when settling in Kentucky, Texas, and Missouri. A great piece of music.

I saw this movie when it first was released for public viewing in 1962. Martin-Cinerama in St. Louis, Missouri and was projected from two separate cameras on the left and right side of the projection booth. Viewed on a HUGE curved screen and almost looked to be 3D. The sound was awesome too! Never forget what those early Americans gave to us was a gift!

Yes, but i think No John Williams Score without the influence of the big composers before. Williams and Zimmer, or Shore with the Lord of the Rings score are today, but the seed for this was planted in the 50s and 60s.@@guileniam

I seen How the West was won on July 6, 1964 at the Atco Drive In movie in Atco, NJ. I was 10 going on 11 then. I just love that movie and I even read the book later when I was living outside San Diego in Spring Valley. It was a great movie with a great cast, great soundtrack, great narration by the late Spencer Tracy.

I rember this song from the soundtrack album that my parents had. I think that it was 1968, in Ft. Defiance, Arizona I would listen to this composition several times a day. Thanks Mom and Dad, for your introduction to this type of music, it has truly enriched my life...and baffled my high school friends.
