In 1939, Newman began a twenty-one year career as music director for 20th Century-Fox Studios. He composed the familiar fanfare which accompanies the studio logo at the beginning of Fox's productions. He was the head of a family of major Hollywood film composers including his son, Thomas Newman, who is currently active. Other notable Newman family members include his brothers, Lionel Newman and Emil Newman, and his nephew, the singer/songwriter Randy Newman.
He received 45 Academy Award nominations (a record in the music categories, now shared with John Williams), winning 9 times.

william,you're right.it was also used in"it's a wonderful life"but 2 other films had the same newman hallelujah.they were"the song of bernadette"and"the robe"!

I'm wondering did Newman write the sacred music or did he adapt it from some other composition. I can't find any reference. The "Hallelujah" chorus at the end is very moving to me and climaxes the film. Oddly enough, Frank Capra stole this same music queue and inserted it into the climax of "It's a wonderful life" when Jimmy Stewart returns to find Bedford Falls returned to its former state.

There's a bit of ave maria by tomas luis de victoria used at start

Indeed this composition is a medley of a lot of sacred music, including De Victoria doubtless. I sang at church choirs (weddings, not mass) and it certainly rings a bell. Listening to this-music for a film, i.e. for the masses, stresses the limit between "serious" and "popular" music. The only measure is probably its permanence; we still listen with pleasure to this composition from the 30's, as we listen to country dances that served the same purpose in the Renaissance.

Newman reused the "Hallelujah" chorus for the end of the 1954 film "The Robe."

@Barry F Thank you! I just stumbled across De Victoria's Ave Maria on YouTube a few days ago: https://youtu.be/zqEMrc1XXSQ?t=52 I was wondering why this film score sounded familiar and authentic. I'd barely heard of De Victoria before; now listening to more.
Do you know where the Alleluia from the "Sanctuary!" scene comes from?
Frank Collins
No, this music was not used in the film It's A Wonderful Life finale. Yes, in The Robe.
