Fado Balada
Alfredo Marceneiro Lyrics

Que um rei, dum reino sem par
Vendo morta a sua amada
Quis o seu seio moldar
E por molde, modelada
Depois de gasto um tesoiro
Nasceu a graça encantada
Duma taça toda d′oiro
Morto por se embriagar
Saudoso, triste sorria
Com vontade de chorar
Certa noite imaculada
à luz do luar divino
Deixou a corte pasmada
E fez-se ao mar sem destino
No mar ansiando a graça
De com a morta se juntar
Bebeu veneno p'la taça
Atirou a taça ao mar
Ao seu seio não há nada
Que se possa igualar
Nem a taça da balada
Que jaz no fundo do mar
Ao seu seio não há nada
Que se possa igualar
Nem a taça da balada
Que jaz no fundo do mar
The lyrics of Fado Balada by Alfredo Marceneiro tell the story of a king who, devastated by the death of his beloved, wished to preserve her memory by creating a gold cup in the shape of her breast. He spent a fortune having the cup made to perfection and would drink from it, often consumed by sorrow and longing for his lost love. One day, overcome by grief and a desire to be with his beloved, he drank poison from the cup and threw it into the sea. The cup, like the king's love, now rests at the bottom of the ocean, beyond reach or comfort.

Conta uma linda balada
This is a beautiful ballad being told
Que um rei, dum reino sem par
About a king, from a kingdom like no other
Vendo morta a sua amada
Who, after seeing his loved one dead
Quis o seu seio moldar
Wanted to mold her breast
E por molde, modelada
As a model, to shape it
Depois de gasto um tesoiro
After spending a fortune
Nasceu a graça encantada
Was born this enchanting grace
Duma taça toda d′oiro
From a cup all of gold
E quando por ela bebia
And when he drank from it
Morto por se embriagar
Dead from being drunk
Saudoso, triste sorria
Melancholic, he smiled
Com vontade de chorar
With the desire to cry
Certa noite imaculada
One immaculate night
à luz do luar divino
Under the divine moonlight
Deixou a corte pasmada
Left the court amazed
E fez-se ao mar sem destino
And set out to sea with no aim
No mar ansiando a graça
Longing for grace at sea
De com a morta se juntar
To be reunited with the dead
Bebeu veneno p'la taça
Drank poison from the cup
Atirou a taça ao mar
Thrown the cup into the sea
Ao seu seio não há nada
There is nothing quite like her breast
Que se possa igualar
That can compare
Nem a taça da balada
Not even the cup from the ballad
Que jaz no fundo do mar
Which lies at the bottom of the sea
Ao seu seio não há nada
There is nothing quite like her breast
Que se possa igualar
That can compare
Nem a taça da balada
Not even the cup from the ballad
Que jaz no fundo do mar
Which lies at the bottom of the sea
