Hey Stoopid
Alice Cooper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey bro, take it slow
You ain't livin' in a video
You're flying low with a high velocity
No doubt, you're stressin' out
That ain't what rock n' roll's about
Get off that one way trip down lonely street

Now I know you've been kicked around
You ain't alone in this ugly town
You stick a needle in your arm
You bite the dust, you buy the farm

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
What ya tryin' to do
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
They win you lose
Hey, hye, hey, hey, hey stoopid

C'mon girl, it's a better day
Get your foot out of that grave
Don't let that one love tear your world apart
C'mon babe, kick that stuff
Show the street it ain't so tough
Quit lyin' around with a crippled, broken heart

Now I know you've been seeing red
Don't put a pistol to your head
sometimes your answer's heaven sent
Your way is so damn permanent

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
What ya tryin' to do
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
They win you lose
Hey, hye, hey, hey, hey stoopid

This ain't your daddy talkin'
You know, I know
Your story ain't so shocking
You know, I know
Blow some steam
C'mon and scream

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
What ya tryin' to do
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid

They win you lose
Hey, hye, hey, hey, hey stoopid

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alice Cooper's Hey Stoopid are a hopeful message to someone who is struggling with addiction and self-destructive behavior. The opening lines urge the listener to slow down and take life at a different pace. The lyrics remind the listener that rock and roll is about freedom and rebellion against societal norms, not about being stuck in a downward spiral. The chorus, "Hey stoopid, what ya tryin' to do?" is a reminder that our choices have consequences and that it's important to think about the long-term effects of our actions.

The second verse is directed at a woman who is also dealing with addiction and heartbreak. The message is the same: it's never too late to turn your life around and make positive changes. The line "sometimes your answer's heaven sent" suggests that the answer to our problems might come in unexpected ways – maybe from a friend, a random occurrence or even a small gesture that can change our lives forever.

The final section of the song is a call to action – to blow off some steam and scream. It's a reminder that sometimes releasing our frustration and anger is the best way to move forward. The repetition of the lines "Hey stoopid, what ya tryin' to do?" and "They win, you lose" is a motivator to take control of our lives and not let societal pressures or addiction win.

@Sabbathman1979

It's amazing how I could never, ever, get tired of listening to this
song. I've heard this song from the radio and listened to this song from
the record probably a million times and still this never gets old.

This song has been part of my life's soundtrack ever since this was
aired on the radio for the first time. Fucking 26 years! From my
childhood through youth to adult life...this song has always been there,
a true and timeless classic that just can't be outshined by anything or
anyone...

You’re flying low with a high velocity
No doubt, you’re stressing out
That ain’t what rock‘n’roll’s about
Get off that one way trip down lonely street

Now I know you’ve been kicked around
You ain’t alone in this ugly town

Get your foot out of that grave
Don’t let that one love tear your world apart
Come on, babe, kick that stuff
Show the street it ain’t so tough
Quit lying around with a crippled, broken heart

Now I know you’ve been seeing red
Don’t put a pistol to your head
Sometimes your answer’s heaven sent
Your way is so damn permanent

[Chorus:]
Hey, hey, hey, hey. Hey, stoopid
What you trying to do?

@@davidfuller4110Yes it is Joe, and the crazy part about revisiting this album after I switched from bass too guitar as a result of Joe and "Surfing with the alien" only to learn Joe and Steve Vai played on it was one of the craziest discoveries of My teenage years playing guitar.

Perhaps it was this video which subconsciously planted the seed for My love of Ibanez JS guitars which I only discovered 5 years or so later?

In revisiting this video only to see Ozzy doing backup vocals 30 years later, I guess the message of this song is to choose life over death if only to spite the "They" this song refers to as who else could discover such a thing and realise that I am only 1 degree of separation from the Sabbath legends as a result of My Dad being born in Birmingham and how I have shaken hands with both Joe and Steve in the course of My life who both contributed to this incredible album.

I guess My reptilian creator Snakebite(byte) actually does have some love for Me which makes dealing with the haters and the fact that the "Me" who "lives in a video" as technology has reached the stage where I and My human avatar can be digitally inserted into any "video" ever recorded by Man as I can be deepfaked, cloned and replicated as can anyone else. In saying this, whilst the value of life and the identity of the individual has been relegated to be worthless as a result of there being no scarcity, no differentiation between people and their lives.

As a time capsule of that preteen period of My life when I was naive and innocent, with dreams, hopes and aspirations of a future where I could live out My dream life as opposed to letting the video version of Me live the dream life I gave him only for Me to get sent to Hell as a prisoner of finances and other's agendas, at least this song and video with it's practical effects serves as a historical reminder of what society once had, yet was lost, all as a result of the internet and technology allowing humans to become Gods of information only to have stupidly rendered themselves to be irrelevant in the process.
