Schools Out
Alice Cooper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin' all that noise
'Cause they found new toys
Well, we can't salute you, can't find a flag
If that don't suit you, that's a drag

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils, no more books
No more teacher's dirty looks, yeah

Well, we got no class
And we got no principals
And we got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes

School's out for summer
School's out forever
My school's been blown to pieces

No more pencils, no more books
No more teacher's dirty looks
Out for summer
Out 'til fall
We might not come back at all

School's out forever
School's out for summer

School's out with fever
School's out completely

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alice Cooper's "School's Out" describe the joy and liberation of students who have finished school for the summer. The opening lines suggest that the students are making noise with their new toys and reveling in their newfound freedom. The singer then declares that the school has been destroyed and despairs at the lack of anything left to rebel against in their newly liberated state.

The second verse continues the celebration of freedom from school, with a playful reference to the lack of rhyme for the word "innocence." The song finishes with a repetition of the chorus, and a final declaration that school is now out completely.

Overall, the lyrics of "School's Out" capture the excitement and rebellious spirit of the end of the school year, with a sense of freedom and joy that is infectious to anyone who has experienced the end of a long academic year.

The title and the song were inspired by a warning often uttered in “The Bowery Boys” movies, in which one of the characters declared to another, “School is out,” meaning “Wise up.” The Bowery Boys were featured in 48 pictures running from 1946 to 1958. They were young tough guys in New York City, who were always finding trouble. The films ran on American TV throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s, eating up a lot of air time. It was one of those TV viewings that caught Alice Cooper’s* attention. The personage Sach did something dumb, which prompted another guy to say, “Hey, Sach, school’s out!” Cooper liked the way the phrase sounded and used it as the basis for this tune.

“School’s Out” was released in the summer of 1972, when school was actually out. It’s since become a fixture at Cooper’s shows, as it was his hugest hit. This concert staple is usually the last number he plays.

The LP opened like a school desk and contained a pair of paper panties. An added value you just don’t get with CDs❕

In 2008, the iconic rocker claimed : “When we did ‘School’s out,’ I knew we had just done the national anthem. I’ve become the Francis Scott Key of the last day of school.”

On May 13, 2009, Cooper interpreted the piece at the Arizona State University graduation ceremony with his son Dashiell’s band, Runaway Phoenix. (Dashiell Cooper graduated from the ASU journalism school.) Alice wore his own varsity letter sweater from Cortez High (Class of ‘66) for the performance, which preceded a speech by US President Barack Obama. 💜🏫💚

* Alice Cooper’s birth name is Vincent Damon Furnier.

As a teacher, I blast this song out every last day of school. I turn up my speakers so it can be heard all the way down the hall. Rock on, Alice

@fjccommish

How does someone who doesn't want the music make that heard down the hall? Keep your noise to yourself.

I used to blast this to wake my son on his first day of summer. I lost him July 1, 2020 but this song will forever be a reminder of him. Thank you for posting. ❤️

@Coffeeisnecessarynowpepper

I am so sorry! How old was he? Are you okay now? I hope you still play this every year

@@Coffeeisnecessarynowpepper unfortunately losing a child does some pretty permanent damage. Not from personal experience just unfortunately from many others I know. Bobby, I know your son is rocking out right along side you in spirit. Stay strong!

@lziv7583

Also after looking at your profile I wanted to say thank you to you and the ones who didn’t come back for all your service. I’m eternally grateful
