Would
Alice In Chains -- MTV Unplugged Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Teach thee on child of love hereafter
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Flying not yet quite the notion
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone?
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone?
If I would, could you?
The lyrics to Alice In Chains' "Would?" portray the struggles of addiction, regret, and the desire for redemption. The lines, "Know me broken by my master, teach thee on child of love hereafter" suggest that the singer is feeling defeated and broken by a higher power or addiction. They are seeking to be taught to love again and find purpose in life.
The repetition of "Into the flood again, same old trip it was back then" suggests that the singer has been through this cycle of addiction and recovery before, and they have found themselves back in the same place. They acknowledge that they have made a big mistake, but they want to try going their own way and finding their own path towards recovery.
The line "Drifting body it's sole desertion, flying not yet quite the notion" could be interpreted as the singer feeling like a ghost or a shell of their former self due to their addiction. They haven't fully embraced sobriety and the idea of flying, or living life to the fullest, seems foreign to them.
Overall, "Would?" reflects the internal struggle of someone dealing with addiction and the desire to break free from the cycle of destruction.
