While down-tuned, distorted guitars mixed with Staley's distinctive "snarl-to-a-scream" vocals appealed to heavy metal fans, the band also had "a sense of melody that was undeniable", which introduced Alice in Chains to a much wider audience outside of the heavy metal underground.
According to Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic, Alice in Chains' sound has a "Black Sabbath-style riffing and an unconventional vocal style". Even though I know what most of these songs are actually about, I've always thought this album could be used to tell the story of a man slowly losing his battle with depression.
Track 1 - Grind: The initial depressive phase. Not too severe yet, and the narrator (who we'll call Tripod, because that's the dog's name) believes he can get through it.
Track 2 - Brush Away: The depression lingers. Tripod doesn't quite understand why his mood hasn't improved.
Track 3 - Sludge Factory: Frustration. Despite Tripod's best efforts, nothing improves. He begins to feel angry at himself.
Track 4 - Heaven Beside You: Tripod finally seeks help, but it doesn't go very well. He leaves angrier than before.
Track 5 - Head Creeps: More resentment. Growing more bitter by the day, Tripod begins to believe he can't be helped.
Track 6 - Again: The breakdown. The negative emotions come to a head as Tripod starts to become self-destructive.
Track 7 - Shame In You: Misery. Perhaps remorseful for his previous actions, Tripod becomes completely demotivated. Nothing he does brings any satisfaction anymore.
Track 8 - God Am: Loneliness. Tripod believes the entire world has turned its back on him. The isolation takes its toll as he wonders why nobody is trying to help him.
Track 9 - So Close: Desperation. Tripod makes one last grasp for any kind of help, but it's no use.
Track 10 - Nothin' Song: Hopelessness. Tripod feels demoralized again, only this time he isn't sad or angry, just... empty. And that's worse.
Track 11 - Frogs: The nadir. At this point, Tripod has lost all hope. Everything he does has no effect on him, and desperate for the torture to stop, he eventually decides to take his own life.
Track 12 - Over Now: Tripod has made peace with his decision, and appears uncharacteristically cheery for a brief period before he finally goes through with it.

Frogs is what it sounds like to die slowly and alone. It's hard not to hear the resignation and hopelessness in the vocals. Easily the most spine chilling song I've heard in any genre.

Even though I know what most of these songs are actually about, I've always thought this album could be used to tell the story of a man slowly losing his battle with depression.
Track 1 - Grind: The initial depressive phase. Not too severe yet, and the narrator (who we'll call Tripod, because that's the dog's name) believes he can get through it.
Track 2 - Brush Away: The depression lingers. Tripod doesn't quite understand why his mood hasn't improved.
Track 3 - Sludge Factory: Frustration. Despite Tripod's best efforts, nothing improves. He begins to feel angry at himself.
Track 4 - Heaven Beside You: Tripod finally seeks help, but it doesn't go very well. He leaves angrier than before.
Track 5 - Head Creeps: More resentment. Growing more bitter by the day, Tripod begins to believe he can't be helped.
Track 6 - Again: The breakdown. The negative emotions come to a head as Tripod starts to become self-destructive.
Track 7 - Shame In You: Misery. Perhaps remorseful for his previous actions, Tripod becomes completely demotivated. Nothing he does brings any satisfaction anymore.
Track 8 - God Am: Loneliness. Tripod believes the entire world has turned its back on him. The isolation takes its toll as he wonders why nobody is trying to help him.
Track 9 - So Close: Desperation. Tripod makes one last grasp for any kind of help, but it's no use.
Track 10 - Nothin' Song: Hopelessness. Tripod feels demoralized again, only this time he isn't sad or angry, just... empty. And that's worse.
Track 11 - Frogs: The nadir. At this point, Tripod has lost all hope. Everything he does has no effect on him, and desperate for the torture to stop, he eventually decides to take his own life.
Track 12 - Over Now: Tripod has made peace with his decision, and appears uncharacteristically cheery for a brief period before he finally goes through with it.
