Ring Them Bells
Alice in Chains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ring them bells, ye heathen
From the city that dreams,
Ring them bells from the sanctuaries
Cross the valleys and streams,
For they're deep and they're wide
And the world's on its side
And time is running backwards
And so is the bride.

Ring them bells, ring them bells!
Ring them bells, ring them bells!

Ring them bells St. Peter
Where the four winds blow,
You gotta ring them bells with an iron hand
So the people will know
That the rush hour is now
On the wheel and the plow
And the sun is going down
Upon the sacred cow.

Ring them bells, ring them bells!
Ring them bells, ring them bells!

Ring them bells Sweet Martha,
For the poor man's son,
You gotta ring them bells so the world will know
That God is one.
For the shepherd is asleep
Where the willows weep
And the mountains are filled
With little lost sheep.

Ring them bells for the blind and the deaf,
Ring them bells for all of us who are left,
Ring them bells for the chosen few
Who will judge the many when the game is through.
Ring them bells, for the time that flies,
For the child that cries
When innocence dies.

Ring them bells St. Catherine
From the top of the room,
Now ring them bells from the fortress
For the lilies in bloom.
For the lines, they are all long
And the fighting is strong
And they're breaking down the distance
Between right and wrong.

Ring them bells, ring them bells!
Ring them bells, ring them bells!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Ring Them Bells" by Alice in Chains are a call to action for people to make their voices heard in a world that is seemingly falling apart. The song begins with a plea to "heathens" to ring bells from the city that dreams and from the sanctuaries, "for they're deep and they're wide, and the world's on its side, and time is running backwards, and so is the bride." This imagery evokes a sense of chaos and instability, as if everything is upside down and backwards, and the only way to make sense of it all is to ring bells and sound the alarm.

The song then calls on St. Peter to ring bells "with an iron hand" so that people will know that the rush hour is now, and that the sun is going down on the sacred cow. This is a reference to the end of the world as we know it, and the need to take action before it's too late. The next verse calls on Sweet Martha to ring bells for the poor man's son, so that the world will know that God is one. This verse speaks to the idea of social justice and the need to fight against inequality and poverty.

The song continues to call for bells to be rung for various causes, including for the blind and deaf, for all of us who are left behind, for the chosen few who will judge the many when the game is through, and for the time that flies and the child that cries when innocence dies. The final verse calls on St. Catherine to ring bells from the fortress for the lilies in bloom, for the lines that are all long, and for the fighting that is strong. It is a call to arms, a reminder that we must keep fighting for what we believe in and ringing our bells to make our voices heard.

Overall, "Ring Them Bells" is a powerful song that speaks to the idea of activism and the need to fight for change. It is a reminder that we must all do our part to make the world a better place, and that we must use our voices to make ourselves heard.

Such a beautiful song! It always warms my heart to know that this two amazing sisters always showed support to Alice In Chains and Layne 🖤

Lindsay Heywood

It’s on this track on a Heart album that I first heard Layne Staley’s voice. I’m a huge Ann Wilson fan, but when Layne sings that third verse, I knew I was hearing something really special. I didn’t even know who he was, but after listening to all of Alice In Chains and Mad Season albums, I sure do now! What a phenomenal singer!

This made me cry like a baby. Layne was such a talent and the world is a better place for having had him in it. Layne I hope you’re at peace because you’ve bought so much of it to others 💖

Andie Kaye
