Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alicks's song "Next To You" express gratitude and admiration towards a significant other. The repetition of "I stand next to you" and "I can't thank the lord for what you do" emphasizes the closeness and appreciation the singer has for this person. The phrase "I can't thank the lord" can suggest that the person is so extraordinary that they defy divine explanation or that their actions are so miraculous they surpass what is capable of being attributed to a higher power. The singer is in awe of this person and feels lucky to be beside them.

The fainter parts of the lyrics could represent the singer's overwhelmed feelings, as they struggle to put into words how much they admire their partner. The repetitive nature of the lyrics can also imply the depth of gratitude and admiration that the singer feels, as if they could repeat those words forever and still not fully express their emotions.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of emotional vulnerability, expressing gratitude towards a person that holds great importance in the singer's life. Whether it is a romantic partner, friend or family member, the admiration conveyed is a testament to the deep bond and closeness between the two individuals.

@Eddie._. Nah fam you're good! I had forgotten about this comment so I appreciate your reply haha.

Also just a warning, this is going to be way more info than you were bargaining for, but I figured I'd share more than I normally would since people in this comment section seem to have an appreciation for this kind of thing. Also typing this all out takes my mind back to some amazing memories. I have several "snapshots" I guess I would call them - memories of certain places and times that are like pictures in my mind. Forgive my lengthy reply; don't feel like you have to read the whole thing (or any of it for that matter).

Taiwan was incredible. The island itself, the culture, the people - everything was beautiful. It's incredibly safe, especially for foreigners. The food was delicious (though I'd suggest staying away from the stinky tofu and 1000 year eggs), and the cost of living was very low. Truly paradise.

I lived in the city for most of my stay, and I loved it. I don't know why, but I absolutely loved the neon lights at night. One of my favorite things was finding tiny hole-in-the wall dumpling or noodle shops, especially at night when it was raining. There'd usually be an old TV in the corner playing a classic Chinese movie. In most cases I had the whole restaurant to myself, other than the one worker who would be both the waiter and the chef. Outside it would be pouring rain and I could see the reflection of all of the neon lights in the street. Something about the aesthetic made for memories that I'll never forget.

The mountainous areas were just as beautiful, but of course for different reasons. Lots of palm trees, wild banana plants, and bamboo farms along with the standard dense jungle plants. Hiking was always fun, and we liked to explore off of the trails. This was a blast, but spooky at times - large banana spiders were everywhere in the jungle. Some were big enough that they could have wrapped their long black legs around my head (thank heavens they never got the chance to do so). Look up pictures if you're feeling brave. Sometimes we'd be riding our bikes along mountain paths and we'd look up and see a bunch of black dots in the sky above us. We'd then speed off as fast as we could, because each of those black dots was a banana spider relaxing in a communal web that had been woven across the gap between the trees on both sides of the road. For whatever reason they seemed to like living in communities over mountain roads and paths.

Between the cities and the mountains there were miles and miles of rice fields. They had a distinct (and pleasant) smell to them that changed as the rice plants would grow bigger. When the plants were small, the sunsets would reflect off the water if you were near them at the right time of day. The borders of the fields were often lined with palm trees. It was beyond beautiful.

There were Buddhist and Taoist temples everywhere. Sometimes we'd be in the absolute middle of nowhere, either in the mountains or between rice fields, and suddenly a temple would appear out of nowhere. The architectural style of these temples was the same as traditional temples in China. Usually they were completely empty when we rode by. Sometimes we'd stop and take a look inside (they were fine with this and we were very careful to not interrupt their worship if someone WAS there). They would often have a giant stick of incense burning slowly, and I grew to love the smell. I have yet to find that same incense here in the states.

As much as I miss all of that stuff, really it's the people that I miss the most. Overall they are an extremely humble, kind, and hardworking people (there were some exceptions, but hey, everywhere has all sorts). When I left Taiwan I felt like I had left a part of my heart behind too.

Again, forgive me for this insanely long reply, but thank you for indulging me for a moment if you've read this far.

but then it rains and you feel one with yourself, it's like the flood gates opening. like staring death right in the eye. because you have been liberated from the shackles of uncertainty. no longer condemned to the limbo of gray above your head, you feel the universe upon your skin, and suddenly, you're not depressed anymore!
