That's due to the height it's flying at. I Live near Edwards AFB in CA, and see so many jets practice maneuvers here. They also might have an afterburner mode or something to quiet it down, too, but don't quote me on that. All I know is the newer F-35's make a sonic boom that cracked our living room window.

Have had B2 fly over multiple times, sometimes zero sound, at Rose Parade very loud an low. It is normally very quite and very hard to see as it is only a line if at similar altitude. It is only easy to see from above or below. It is also IR stealthy. So triple stealth: radar and visual very hard to detect, IR weakness is from rear and a slightly above. BTW we didn't think the radar stealth would be viable for this long.

Back years before the B-2 was publicly released, I was out playing with some friends and heard something weird and looked up as the sound was coming from above... Only to see a "triangular batwing" shaped object flying across a full moon, and word of what I had seen reached the school counselor... I was called to his office and told to draw what I had seen and he said "nothing that shape can fly".... After the B-2 was revealed, I walked back into his office and asked if he had seen the B-2 reveal and he had... I said "is that drawing I made for you years ago in my file" and it was, he pulled it out and his jaw hit the floor....

1:30 What if radar waves hit B-2's wing perpendicularly?

Imagine a radar station which direction from a flying B-2 is perpendicular to B-2's wing leading edge. More precisely, wing's leading edge angle is 35º, therefore an azimuth of 35º from B-2 to radar station would compromise plane's stealth?

Also, it's known that B-2 surfaces use "continuous curvature". I don't know if this suffices to avoid the before-mentioned situation.

@haid weng It's carbon-reinforced plastic, bro. Makes no difference if a missile hits carbon fiber or Titanium. But carbon fiber does absorb radiation very well. The paint and the shape are really what do most of the stealth job. Maybe there is some other material cause the military won't tell us.

Nice video. Thanks. I'd suggest enlarging it to include a bit of the history that led to Have Blue, F-117, Pave Blue, B-2 projects, and the newer fighters, YF-23 (so beautiful!), F-22 and F-35, which all started from an scientific paper by a Russian physicist, translated to English, that landed at the desk of researcher in Lockheed's Skunk Works. The physics behind the process is also very interesting. Thanks once again.

My friends father was one of the core designers of this aircraft when he served in the air force. He still to this very day won't even tell his own son (my friend) a peep about it. I'm still amazed how ingenious him and his team were to create such a fine piece of engineering for its time.

There's something you missed, I actually consider kind of a big thing, the B-2 isn't invisible to ALL radars. Here's the thing: lots of SAM sites (very big ones such as S-400/ 500) consist of two kinds of radar systems, Low frequency radar (L-band, early warning radar, in use during WWII) and High frequency radar (X-band, also used on fighter jets). The L-band radars don't really care about the shape of an object, and in fact can detect the B-2 easily, even though the B-2 does have some L-band reducing design features, they only help a little, but there's a catch. L-band radars are not accurate enough to give targeting info to a missile (another downside to L-band is that they have to be huge and cumbersome) so this is where X-band radars come in. These type of radars are used to guide radar guided missile to their intended target, which is why fighter jets use them, but this part of the spectrum is where the B-2 is meant to be stealthy, so they can see the B-2 but can't shoot anything at it. X-band radars do consider the shape of the object a lot more significantly than L-band so the B-2's shape absorbs and deflects radar waves WAAAAAAY easier than it does with L-band radars. Remote detection is a dark arts in its own rights… sonar, radar, lidar, IR…

I studied geology in college but avoided a geophysics major coz the amount of math u need to grasp will arguably make even engineers cry. The way geophysicists can manipulate the returning geophone signals just by dailing in some equations is both incredible and mysterious. And im sure the same theories and concepts apply to other forms of remote detection.

You do know that in the over 40 years of service, the B2 has never been engaged, attacked, or destroyed. All missions, these birds flew were successful, and they made it back to the base. Stealth doesn't necessarily mean not being caught; it's more of not being tracked consistently. Sure, you want to remain as invisible as possible, but that's not always possible.

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding here of how RCS works. Even if your RADAR system can detect a bird, it won't show up on RADAR until it is very close. Same way your eye's will not see a bird until it is relatively close. It's a matter of buying time as much as anything.

That's only when the stealth aircraft is close enough to be clearly detected. It is virtually impossible to discern it from background clutter before it's too late, since our atmosphere is (obviously) not a vacuum. It's not like a bird size blip will suddenly appear on radar; if it were that simple, then nobody would be developing LO aircraft.

About the Ho 229, it really wasn't that stealthy. Due to the engines being imbedded into the fueselage, it's radar cross section was only 20% less than other aircraft of the time. It also suffered instability issues due to a lack of rudder, and had no radar absorbing materials. Stealth simply wasn't a priority for it. It likely only had the shape of a flying wing to meet the contract requirements, but not specifically for stealth.

Nice video, but to my knowledge the Horten and other ww2 flying wing aeroplanes were not that particular shape to counter radar detection. The flying wing design is possibly just a very efficient shape for any aeroplane, especially planes meant to lift heavy loads such as bombers.

There are aspects of stealth tech you failed to mention. Such as charging the wing with an electromagnetic field that causes a much greater laminar air flow thus reducing radar return normally caused by micro turbulence. The downside of this technique is not being able to fly in rain and maintain your stealth and also becoming something of a lightning magnet.

Just so you know, the Horton 229 was actually designed to by the first flying wing aircraft made from lighter composite materials, but it wasn't until around the 1980s (when the American Air Force was experimenting with stealth planes) that its creator decided to sell his plane as a stealth fighter in an effort to obtain defence contracts when his business was failing.

The Man who taught me radar in college was one of the radar specialists who worked to develop this plane. Fun fact, he was a member of the program, but it was strictly top secret so he couldn't tell anyone. Also, secretly, his wife was a member of the program. Neither had any idea the other was a member of the program, and they both lived double lives for many years. Now they look back at it and laugh. The guy is an expert on radar guided missiles and whatnot, and that's what he taught me in college.

The Horten 229 was unintentionally stealth, they did not design it with stealth in mind. It just so happens that when you construct your plane out of wood, it gains a stealth ability. There was no secret stealth technology.

When I was a teen I had a friend who's dad maintained the wheels and doors of B-2 Stealth Bombers. He said that he was told there are additional factors to it's ability to mitigate it's radar profile. Such as white paneling made of a material that reflects radar underneath the darker paneling back into the darker paneling so that waves don''t get a chance to bounce. He also said that radar projects upward and traces a cone. So if they know where the radar stations are they can fly low enough to pass through negative space in the area stations cover. Anecdotal at best I know. But it made sense to me on the surface of it at least.

Two or three years ago, I was driving home from my fencing class at night when, right before I turned into my driveway, I looked up and saw two patterns of lights that were unmistakably B-2s flying at low altitude toward the nearby Air National Guard base. And late last year, while walking around my street, I looked up and saw a B-2 flying above my house (though at a much higher altitude). I think these planes are so darn impressive that I can't describe them with words, and I'm glad that I ever got to see them!

You forgot one more thing I think you should have added, the creator of the whole company of Northrop (Jack Northrop) is the man who made the first fly wing prototype in the world, the N-9M was the first flying wing ever to fly, made in 1929, followed by the Horton Brother's Ho-229 world's first jet powered flying wing, and then back to Northrop, the XB-35 Piston engine bomber and then the YB-49 Jet powered flying wing, and then with the advent of fly by wire, the creation of the B-2 Spirit.

Just a quick correction: Nothrop himself didnt make the B-2. When he was presented with the design, he replied: " Now I know why God has kept me alive for the last 25 years". He sadly didnt live until 1985 to see it fly; he died in 1982.

Another interesting facet of Northrop's obsession with flying wings is that he invented the box spar design used so successfully in the DC-2 and DC-3 planes. It's such a shame that cronyism and political bullshit led to the XB-35 and YB-49 being dropped in favor of the B-36. Northrop's tests suggested that the XB-35 could have easily accomplished transatlantic flights all the way back in the late 1940's.

If it's TLDR, watch "Was the horten really stealthy".

The horten was never expected to be stealthy, and it wasn't by any means. It only had a 15% smaller signature than other jets of the time, it wasn't even made of any strong radar absorbing material.

National Geographic created a reproduction of Horton 229 and tested it for radar cross-section using the same frequencies that Brits used in WWII and it was not stealthly, the engine intakes are very reflective. But it was less visible and much faster than any other aircraft of that time meaning when Brits would be able to detect it, it would be way too late to intercept it.

Even the B-2 isn't completely stealth, the Ho-229 was a very advanced tech for its time...

I remember the progam. As I recall it did reduce detection range though not as a deliberate design factor.

The only reason it was less visible is because it was mostly made of wood, which isn't the best microwaves reflecting material in the first place.

Such a weird thing that you commented on the ho229. Besides the fact that it was a flying wing, which was wanted because of range, not stealth there was no evidence that the Germans attempted to make it more stealthy other than the simple fact that a flying wing is automatically harder to see.

How does the influence of nazi designs, when Jack Northrop also came up with the idea in 1939, and the XP-56 Black Bullet.
Which lead to the XB-35 and YB-49. Northrop was a champion of flying wings.

Loved the video, but the Horton Ho, the Nazi aircraft mentioned at the end, was nowhere near a stealth bomber, and when a replica was built using the same materials, it was found that the aircraft showed up on the radar plain as day.

More interestingly, if you took a photo of B2 in broad daylight, it looks like missing pixels indicating broken camera than a huge plane.

Supposedly stealth aircraft, could be quite simple to find really, just triangulate from, ground, sat and air, three radars working in conjunction for the same given radius... plus any absorbent coatings, can be overcome by more powerful radar transmissions, every material has it's own and unique radar signature... Unfortunately we don't as yet have the technology to build an entire aircraft out of carbon fibre and ceramics...

Interestingly enough, the 229 was not made for stealth, but it's lower radar visibility was a healthy side effect.

Isnt it possible to create some sort of anti-radar? Unlike a regular radar which sends and recieves, this one sends then expects radiowaves to come back. if there is a area that is missing its return (a stealth aircraft deflecting it away), that could create the image of something is actually there.

Peter Peterson no radar is radar they use the same radar as speed guns use they just use it to calculate speed instead of location and size

This has always been my favorite aircraft. I like how it is still ahead of our time, even though it is using technology from the 70's and 80's. It was a great feat in engineering, and really sparks interest in all of us.

If the paint is radio wave reflective, how does some of the equipment work in the aircraft such as coms?

Microwave reflective. Not Radio wave reflective. It's a misnomer caused by the term "R.A.D.A.R.", meaning RAdio Detection And Ranging. Though most R.A.D.A.R.'s use something along the lines of microwaves.

Hmm, I understood that the "triangle" shape makes the radio-waves diverting, that 100% correct if the radar emits the waves on the same horizontal plan of the plane. So what happen when the radar is just under the plan, in this situation the plane is just a big flat piece of steel, then highly detectable nope ? And this question is the same for a lot of other angles ..

Radar Absorbent Paint won't get you much stealth. F-117 (retired) and B2 uses a different technology. It used a paint made with Quasi Crystalline Materials. When Electro-Magnetic Radiation of Radio-Microwave frequency is incident on it, it performs 180 degree phase shift and reflects it in the opposite direction as the incident rays, the Incident and the reflected ray, being equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, creates a zero vector electromagnetic resultant and you don't get back the reflected rays on your receives and therefore you don't see it. F-35 and F22 probably don't use this technology. This same zero vector technology was used in Nazi Submarines which made them undetectable, until the Soviets developed another new tool to detect Nazi subs. When two or more em waves form a zero vector resultant, a scalar wave is created which is hyper spatial and doesn't propagate like normal light. Tesla named these waves, Standing columnar waves because they stand in a certain area of space time unlike normal transverse waves. The Soviets figured out if one could detect these waves, you can nullify stealth technology. And the most interesting thing about scalar waves is that, when you create scalar longitudinal waves of frequency between 100-400 hertz, you can actually curve our 3D space time which is one of the medium of propagation of these waves, i.e. you can float a battleship using gravity waves using less energy than a light bulb, like they did in Philadelphia. Also the Nazis had this technology developed but they couldn't find out a way to control the maneuvering because of lack of computing power and also because of the mass cancellation effect of the scalar waves. The reason why you don't learn about the Original Maxwell's Quaternion equations that tells us how to convert transverse em waves into scalar waves, is because, when you curve space, NONE! of the laws of Thermodynamics are applicable at that point in space-time, because the Laws of Thermodynamics were created assuming a flat space time as the concept of curvature of space wasn't developed or established yet. The Islamic Republic of Iran is very close to this technology and in about the next 30 years, they won't have to rely on fossil fuels, wind mills, solar panels, nuclear fission plants and even fusion power, which Lockheed had developed in the 70s.

You neglected to mention the elaborate exhaust cooling system, it's also an important aspect in stealth aviation, no point building a billion dollar bomber if it lights up like a Christmas tree through a relatively cheap set of thermal goggles and shot down with a $38,000-$600,000 heat seeking missile.

Great Video👌🏼. However I don't believe the HO229 would've made any impact if introduced in 1945... after all, Germany by then had no fuel and runways from which to operate planes, and also, if it flew to bomb, let's say Paris, it would've been easily shot down on the return trip...
