Alien Sex Fiend recorded a cassette (The Lewd, the Mad, the Ugly and Old Nick) with Youth of Killing Joke, which brought them to the attention of the UK music press, along with the appearance of their track "R.I.P." on the Batcave club compilation, The Batcave: Young Limbs and Numb Hymns 1983, released by London Records in 1983.
They signed to the Cherry Red sub-label Anagram Records, releasing their first single, "Ignore the Machine", in August 1983. The single was immediately successful on the UK Independent Chart, reaching No. 6. Their debut studio album, Who's Been Sleeping in My Brain, was released by Anagram on 1 November 1983, followed by Acid Bath in 1984. They released the world's first 11" single, "E.S.T. (Trip to the Moon)", that October.
The band also recorded two BBC Peel Sessions in 1984. At the May session, they recorded "Attack!!!", "Dead and Buried", "Ignore the Machine" and "Hee Haw"; at the August session, "In God We Trust", "E.S.T. (Trip to the Moon)" and "Boneshaker Baby".
In October 1985, their third studio album Maximum Security reached No. 100 on the UK Albums Chart and remained there for the week of 12 October. They also had two top 100 singles with "Dead and Buried" in August 1984 (No. 91) and a reissued "Ignore the Machine" in March 1985 (No. 99). Throughout the early 1980s, their work was frequently in the UK Indie Chart and remained a fixture on American college radio.
The band also became popular in Japan, and in 1985, they released a live album recorded there, Liquid Head in Tokyo. Freshwater left later in 1985, and the band continued as a trio, supporting Alice Cooper on his "The Nightmare Returns" tour in 1986 and releasing "It" the Album that October. The band was reduced to a duo of the Wades when James left following the release of 1987's Here Cum Germs.
In early 1988, the band, as the Dynamic Duo, recorded a one-off 12" single "Batman Theme" with recording and live engineer Len Davies, before continuing as Alien Sex Fiend, incorporating electronics and sampling even more into their sound on the album Another Planet, released in November 1988. They reverted to a four-piece with the 1989 addition of two prior guest collaborators, drummer/guitarist Andrew Wilson (a.k.a. Rat Fink Jr., formerly of the Turnpike Cruisers) and keyboardist/guitarist Simon "Doc" Milton, who made their official debut on that year's Too Much Acid? double-live album. Their seventh studio album, Curse, was released in October 1990.
Fink and Milton departed in 1992, following that year's Open Head Surgery album and its subsequent tour (documented on The Altered States of America live album).
The Wades then became a duo once again and provided the soundtrack for the Digital Image Design game Inferno in 1994.
In the mid 1990s, the band's video for "Zombified" appeared on the MTV show, Beavis and Butthead, subjected to their usual commentary.
In 1996, the Wades launched their own 13th Moon label, issuing three further albums: Nocturnal Emissions (1997), Information Overload (2004) and Death Trip (2010).
On 9 November 2018, Alien Sex Fiend released Possessed, their first album in eight years, on Cherry Red.
Music style
Alien Sex Fiend has been described as gothic rock, deathrock and industrial. Glenn Danzig has cited the group's sonorous and echoing sounds as having influenced the mixing for several of the recordings for his group Samhain.
Later projects
Fink published a book in 2000, Once Upon a Fiend, recalling his experiences in the band. He later drummed for Blackpool bands United States of Mind and Dog Food before joining Uncle Fester in 1999, who changed their name to UFX in 2006. Fink currently serves as frontman of Vince Ripper and the Rodent Show, a duo also featuring Vince "Ripper" Cornwall. They perform Alien Sex Fiend and the Cramps material, and have released two albums, It's Fun to Be a Monster and Boneyard a Go Go!!!.

water... no...
(dee dee dee dee)
(da da da da)
have you ever had gas before?
four three two one
and 20 seconds past the hour...
sucking on a long cigarette
he looks into the machinery...
there must be more to life than this
more to life...
i think i need some est or
a trip to the moon
i think i need some est, trip to the moon
trip to the moon
the time is now 4.58 and 2 seconds...
his eyes are all grey and blown inside...
he looks into the machinery
puffing on that cold cigarette
feel his life slipping through my hands...
there must be more to life than this
i think i need some est, trip to the moon
i think i need some est, trip to the moon
trip to the moon
have you ever had gas before?
four three two one
sucking on that cold cigarette
i looked into the machinery
my eyes are all grey inside
like some blown fuses
take my hand
take my life
take my home
and take my wife
i think i need some est or
a trip to the moon

The lyrics of Alien Sex Fiend's song E.S.T. (Trip to the Moon) depict the singer's desire to escape from his mundane life and achieve a higher sense of consciousness. The reference to "est" (Erhard Seminars Training) suggests that he is seeking a transformative experience that will take him beyond the limits of his current state of being. He feels trapped by the machinery of his life and longs for something more. The repetition of "trip to the moon" emphasizes the singer's desire to transcend earthly reality and explore the unknown. The countdown at the end of the song adds to the sense of anticipation and reinforces the idea that the singer is on the brink of a significant change.
Line by Line Meaning
water... no...
The singer is likely responding to an unrelated question or comment about water in some way, perhaps expressing confusion or a lack of interest.
(dee dee dee dee)
This line is an expression of monotony or boredom, using onomatopoeia to mimic a repetitive sound.
(da da da da)
As with the previous line, this demonstrates boredom or lack of engagement, possibly indicating that the singer is waiting for something to happen.
have you ever had gas before?
This line addresses the listener directly, inquiring whether they have experienced the sensation of having gas, which might be intended as a metaphor for feeling uncomfortable or uneasy.
four three two one
Counting down from four to one, this line is reminiscent of a rocket launch or other dramatic event, preparing the listener for something important.
the time is now 4.57 / and 20 seconds past the hour...
This line establishes a specific time, indicating that the events that follow are taking place at a particular moment. It also conveys a sense of precision and urgency, as if the singer has something important to do or say.
sucking on a long cigarette / he looks into the machinery...
The singer describes a scene in which someone (presumably the singer themselves, but not specified) is smoking and examining some kind of equipment, possibly suggesting uncertainty or boredom.

This line expresses dissatisfaction or disillusionment with current circumstances, indicating the artist's desire for something more or something different.
i think i need some est or / a trip to the moon / i think i need some est, trip to the moon / trip to the moon
The artist expresses a desire for escape or transformation, whether through a drug experience ('est') or a literal trip to the moon. This could represent a desire to break free of the monotony or dissatisfaction mentioned earlier and to seek out something new or exciting.
the time is now 4.58 and 2 seconds...
This line is an update on the time from the earlier line, perhaps indicating that time is ticking away or that the artist is conscious of the minutes slipping by.
his eyes are all grey and blown inside...
The singer describes someone with eyes that appear dull or lifeless, which could suggest an emotional or psychological state of numbness or detachment.
puffing on that cold cigarette / feel his life slipping through my hands... / there must be more to life than this
The artist returns to describing someone smoking, this time suggesting that they are wasting their life or letting it slip by without meaning or purpose. This connects to the earlier expression of dissatisfaction and desire for something more.
feel my life running away / feel my life slipping through - your hands
This line shifts to a first-person perspective, with the singer expressing a personal sense of loss or failure. The mention of 'your hands' is ambiguous and could be directed at any number of people or entities.
take my hand / take my life / take my home / and take my wife
This line contains a series of imperatives, each beginning with the word 'take.' It's unclear whether the singer is directing these statements at someone else or expressing their own desire to relinquish control or responsibility. The range of items mentioned (hand, life, home, wife) suggests a comprehensive surrender of some kind.
have you ever had gas (ugh) before? (aaagh) / i think i need some / est, trip to the moon / i think i need some est, trip to the moon
The singer returns to the earlier gas metaphor, expressing physical discomfort or perhaps spiritual unease. They again express a desire for escape or transformation through 'est' or a trip to the moon.
sucking on that long cigarette / you look into the machinery / cha cha cha cha / i i i think i need some est / or a trip to the moon / you can't make rubbers from my brain
This final stanza returns to the scene of someone smoking and inspecting machinery. The repetition of 'i' in the third line suggests stuttering or uncertainty. The last line is cryptic and difficult to interpret, but it could suggest a refusal to be molded or constrained by external influences.
trip to the moon / trip to the moon / trip to the moon / i think i need some est, trip to the moon / sucking on that long cigarette / you look into the machinery
These final lines restate the earlier themes of escape and dissatisfaction, again returning to the image of smoking and inspecting machinery. The repetition of 'trip to the moon' confirms the desire for escape or transcendence.
10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - one...
This is a countdown similar to the one earlier in the song, perhaps indicating the end of the journey or the end of the singer's patience.

This track is so great, I remember hearing it for the first time and I was a little under the influence of alcohol and it was really standing out (even though during that time there were endless gems around). Looking back, it reminds me of Pop Will Eat Itself, just more goth, darker. Brilliant! Miss the days!!!!!!!!!!
