Jacob's Dream
Alison Krauss Lyrics
In the spring of 1856, with the snow still on the ground
Two little boys were lost in the mountains above the town
The father went out hunting, the boys had stayed behind
While mother tended to her chores, they wandered from her side
The two had gone to follow him and lost their way instead
By dusk the boys had not been found and fear had turned to dread
Two hundred men had gathered there to comb the mountainside
The fires were built on the highest peak in hopes they'd see the light
The day is almost over, soon it will be night
We're so cold and hungry, and our feet are tired and sore
We promise not to stray again from our cabin door
Now Jacob Diverd woke one night from a strange and eerie dream
He saw a path between two hills near a dark and swollen stream
He told his wife he saw the boys huddled close beside a log
For two more nights the dream returned this vision sent from God
Oh mommy and daddy, why can't you hear our cries?
The day is almost over, soon it will be night
We're so cold and hungry, and our feet are tired and sore
We promise not to stray again from our cabin door
A thousand men had searched in vain the west side of pop's creek
But Jacob's wife knew of this place and said to travel east
With a guide to take him there Jacob came upon the scene
And found the boys cold and still beneath the old birch tree
Oh mommy and daddy, look past the tears you cry
We're both up in Heaven now, God is by our side
As you lay us down to rest in the presence of the Lord
Know that we will meet you here at Heaven's door
Oh mommy and daddy, look past the tears you cry
We're both up in Heaven now, God is by our side
And as you lay us down to rest in the presence of the Lord
Know that we will meet you here at Heaven's door

Songfacts reports that in 2011 Krauss recorded her first ever number one country album in her home country with Paper Airplane. She has also sold upwards of 11 million records and garnered 2 Oscar nominations as well as 26 Grammy® Awards, the most for any female artist in Grammy® history.
Also impressive is Krauss's unwavering commitment to being an independent-label artist who has succeeded far beyond the scope of many major-label artists. She has circulated freely within pop, mainstream country and roots music circles, as a solo artist and with her long-time band Union Station, creating impeccably produced records that appeal to an equally wide-ranging and inquisitive audience. Krauss has continued doing things the old-fashioned way: following her heart and whatever path the music takes her on.

I made the mistake of listening to this song for the first time while driving. Had to pull over because I was crying too hard. This song is just an otherworldly level of beauty and sadness.

I grew up close to where this happened and as a kid my father took me to see the monument. I have been telling my boyfriend about the area and its history. I just love this songand it is about time artists got back to folk songs again. this is a sad but very true story.i would love to thank her for brining this story back to light.

I lived in this area as a young boy and hunted in this area many times. My Pap used to tell me the story of these children when we were preparing to hunt these woods. It always gave me an eerie feeling when we used to go there to say the least. Allison brought tears to my eyes when i first listened to this heart wrenching song . She once said it was a very difficult song to do because of its extremely sad content and almost didn't go through with recording it! I am so glad she did, it will always be special to me

@B & G Farm and Homestead Was your mother closely related to the parents of the two boys? It is always fascinating talking to the relatives of those we have heard of from the past, and I’m curious what you know about this phenomenon.
