Cthulhu
Alkaloid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember
Before the Watchers came
Before Time became a lie

I remember
When molten soil fed but fl ame
When we brought water from the sky
I am hunger
Contracting into cells
I am the anger
Wherein the hunger dwells

Asunder
My temples have been torn asunder
My children lost
Forlorn they wander
Until my body is reborn in thunder
That crushes the world

Cthulhu
Buried in the deep
Cthulhu
Awaken from your sleep
Cthulhu
No more in death to lie
Cthulhu
For even death may die

I can see where you are
Sense the fear in you
Taste the blood of a star
Feel me breathe in your soul
Like the poets of old

For they always knew

When the lids of the one eternal eye unfold
All-encompassing
Nothing but itself it shall behold

And asunder
The universe is torn
From under the endless seas shall be born a wonder
A rift in space-time to adorn and plunder
The ruins of a lie

I am the keeper of the gate
Herald of the Ancients
Physical mind
If you seek yourself in me
Me in you is all you will fi nd

solo - Morean

Asunder
Reality is torn
From under pulsing skin shall be born a wonder
A new breed of creature to adorn and plunder
The ruins of a world

Cthulhu
Buried in the deep
Cthulhu
Awaken from your sleep
Cthulhu
No more in death to lie
Cthulhu
For even death may die

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alkaloid's song "Cthulhu" evoke a prehistoric world before the arrival of the "Watchers" (presumably referring to the ancient astronauts popularized by Zecharia Sitchin), when the laws of physics were different and the connection between the elements was closer. The singer embodies a creature that is both hungry and angry, "contracting into cells," with temples "torn asunder" and lost children wandering. This creature seems to be a manifestation of Cthulhu, the legendary cosmic entity created by H.P. Lovecraft, who is hailed and invoked in the chorus. Cthulhu is depicted as a being buried in the deep of the ocean, waiting to awaken and bring about a cataclysmic transformation of reality.

The lyrics use archaic and mystical language to describe this process of awakening and transformation, with references to the "one eternal eye" and the tearing of the universe. The singer proclaims to be the "keeper of the gate" and the "Herald of the Ancients," suggesting a kinship with Cthulhu and the other incomprehensible entities that populate Lovecraft's cosmology. The song ends on a powerful note of destruction and creation, with a "new breed of creature" emerging from the ruined world.

Overall, the lyrics of "Cthulhu" are a vivid and imaginative homage to Lovecraft's mythology, drawing upon its themes of cosmic horror, ancient knowledge, and transcendentalism. The song invites the listener to imagine a world beyond the mundane and the familiar, where the forces of chaos and creation are in constant struggle.

Fun fact
Morean auditioned to be the new guitarist of Morbid Angel after Rutan left
Which means he would have appeared on
You guessed it
Fuckin Illud Divinum Insanus
Personally I think, in a way, my man dodged a bullet there lol
Imagine having THAT on your resume alongside all the other kickass things you've done lol
On the flip side of the same coin you could at least say you are/were a guitarist in fuckin MORBID ANGEL which is crazy. Especially would have been crazy for Morean given how much he looks up to those guys.
It's entirely possible that he wouldn't have had time to do Alkaloid and Alkaloid would have never formed in this alternate timeline where Morean got picked from the audition, as in the early Alkaloid videos he states that he was very busy and considering declining the offer but was pushed over the edge to being convinced by being told the rest of the lineup Hannes had in mind for the project. But personally I think I'm living in the better timeline in that regard as a music fan because...
Call me a whackjob but I personally massivelyyyy prefer what Hannes and Morean are composing for Alkaloid to what Trey and co are writing these days.

@SoniaAnubis

UGH definitely my favourite tune together with alter magnitudes, Cthulhu has this low vocs and slow riffage + audible double bass = perfect combi. And the theme is fucking cool. SO glad that I've had the chance to see Alkaloid live in Haarlem. Not only technically good musicians but also fabulous songwriters. IA CTHULHU FHTAGN
