December
All About Eve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a Victorian tin, I keep my memories in,
I found it up in the attic.
After looking inside, I find the things that I'm hiding
The leaves saved from a mistletoe kiss,
Only nostalgia has me feeling like this
Like I miss you,
It must be the time of year.
Remember December,
It's like a wintergreen beside a diamond stream,
Remember December,
A fall of snow and the afterglow.
It could be taking our breath away
But the years stand in the way,
Remember December,
How does it make you feel inside ?

Beneath a Valentine, I see a locket is shining
I think it must be the wine,
Makes me feel it's all real.
Where nothing seems to rhyme
To breathe life into the dust of a keepsake
I might as well try to fix a chain on a snowflake
Or a heartache,
It must be the time of year.
Remember

Should I feel this alone, should I pick up the phone
Should I call you up and wish you 'Happy Christmas' ?
I feel so alone, should I pick up the phone

Take my heart in my hand
And ask if you remember

Overall Meaning

The song, December, by All About Eve is a nostalgic track that talks about the emotions that come up during the holiday season. The singer in the song keeps a Victorian tin, which holds memories that she wants to keep safe. She found it in the attic and decides to go down memory lane. As she opens the tin, she finds remnants of a Mistletoe kiss she had with a loved one, and all those old feelings come rushing back. She misses that person a lot and realizes that it must just be the time of the year.

The song has a wistful and melancholic vibe to it, which reflects the singer's feelings. She remembers December as a time of wintergreen beside a diamond stream, and a fall of snow with an afterglow. However, she also realizes that the years have stood in the way of her reliving those moments. Despite that, she asks her lover whether he remembers how it felt to be all loved up on a cold winter's night. The singer wonders whether she should pick up the phone and call her lover and wish him a happy Christmas or whether she should pour out her heart and ask if he remembers how it felt to be with her.

31 years of trying to look for this song which I heard once on the radio but never again, most unfortunately... Found again. This song is so hauntingly beautiful, it´s magic!

The years stood in the way of you listening to this incredible song!

@richardcook4403

It look me almost as long to find Sabiá by Antônio Carlos Jobim, which I'd heard a couple of times in the mid-90s. It has a similar melancholy to it, probably from the fado influence on the genre.
