The song "Please Don't" by All Thats Left is a heart-wrenching ballad about a failed relationship and the aftermath that one person goes through. The singer is asking their former partner to not act interested in anyone else, as they had previously asked them to do before they left. The singer is still hung up on their past partner and cannot move on, exemplified by their actions of going to retrieve their belongings and making late-night phone calls.
The chorus, "Never thought I could be something that I'm not, with or without you. And even though I tried to be something else it got me far from you" is an admission that the singer had tried to change themselves to fit with their partner's expectations, but it still wasn't enough to save the relationship. They may have lost a part of themselves in the process of trying to please their partner, and even though they tried to be something else, it only pushed them further apart.
The lyrics of "Please Don't" are a realization that the singer did not need to change who they were to be happy, and that their partner was not the right fit for them.
