Allen J. Bush Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With devotion
You put your hands in
And rip my heart out
Eat the music
Does he conceal
What he really feels?
And I love him for that
Let's split him open
Like a pomegranate
Insides out
All is revealed
Not only women bleed
Take the stone out
Of the mango
You put it in your mouth
And pull a plum out
Take a papaya
You like a guava?
Grab a banana
And a sultana
Rip them to pieces
With sticky fingers
Split the banana
Crush the sultana
Split 'em open
With devotion
You put your hands in
And rip their hearts out
Like a pomegranate
Insides out
He's a woman at heart
And love him for that
Take a papaya
You like a guava?
Grab a banana
And a sultana
Rip them to pieces
With sticky fingers
Split the banana
Crush the sultana
All emotion
And with devotion
You put your hands in
What ya thinking?
What am I singing?
A song of seeds
The food of love
Eat the music
The song "Music" by Allen J. Bush is a passionate and sensual tribute to the power of music and the emotions it can evoke. The lyrics are structured around a metaphor of food, exploring the idea of opening oneself up and revealing one's emotional core, much like cutting open a fruit and revealing its juicy interior. The opening lines set the tone for the song, with the singer inviting their lover to split them open with devotion and rip their heart out, "Eat the music." This imagery is striking and speaks to the transformative power of music, which can be both nourishing and devastating.
As the song progresses, the singer shifts their focus to a male lover who they describe as "a woman at heart." This lyric is particularly interesting because it speaks to the fluid nature of gender and identity, and suggests a celebration of queerness and non-conformity. The metaphor of cutting open a fruit is revisited to describe the emotional process of revealing oneself, "Like a pomegranate, insides out, all is revealed," suggesting that the singer sees their lover's feminine identity as something to be celebrated and explored, rather than hidden or repressed.
The chorus of the song is a repetition of the opening verses, but with the addition of more fruit imagery. The lines "Take a papaya, you like a guava? Grab a banana and a sultana, rip them to pieces with sticky fingers" are sensual and playful, and contribute to the overall mood of the song as a celebration of sensuality and intimacy.

This work is more inspired by British people's plight and despair during the Great Depression than by world war events in 1939-40. In 1942, the composer wrote: "In this Symphony, the composer’s intention is to evoke the feelings of the men and women of Britain during the 1930s. There is no programme of events depicted; the three main movements are more in the nature of mood pictures, each an expression of the prevailing mental and emotional atmosphere of the social movement of the time."

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this symphony. I heard of Bush but can't remember having ever heard any of his music. Thanks for the post.

Liked the energy, textures, and playfulness of the second and fourth movements. The harmonic language is pretty dissonant.
