The Truth
Allen Kris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lyin' next to you
Wishing I could disappear, hey
Let you fall asleep
And vanish out into thin air, hey

It's the elephant in the room
And we pretend that we don't see it.
It's the avalanche that looms above our heads.
And we don't believe it.

Tryin' to be perfect
Tryin' not to let you down, yeah
Honesty is honestly the hardest thing for me right now, yeah
While the floors underneath our feet are crumbling
The walls we built together tumblin'
I still stand here holdin' up the roof
'Cause it's easier than telling the truth.

I still keep your photographs
I remember how we used to laugh
I can keep on losin' sleep
If you're okay with being torn in half.

It's the elephant in the room
And we pretend that we don't see it.
It's an avalanche that looms above our heads
But we don't believe it.

Tryin' to be perfect,
Tryin' not to let you down, yeah
Honesty is honestly the hardest thing for me right now, yeah
While the floors underneath our feet are crumblin'
The walls we built together tumblin'
I still stand here holdin' up the roof
'Cause it's easier than telling the truth.

Stop ignoring that our hearts are mourning
And let the rain come in.
Stop pretending that it's not ending
And let the end begin.

Oh yeah

Tryin' to be perfect,
Tryin' not to let you down, yeah
Honesty is honestly the hardest thing for me right now, yeah
While the floors underneath our feet are crumblin'
The walls we built together tumblin'
I still stand here holdin' up the roof
'Cause it's easier than telling the truth.

It's easier than telling the truth

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Allen Kris's "The Truth" express the struggle of being honest in a relationship that is slowly falling apart. While lying next to their partner, the singer wishes they could disappear and avoid confronting the issues that are tearing them apart. The "elephant in the room" represents the problems that are obvious but ignored, and the "avalanche" symbolizes looming destruction that they try to deny. The singer admits that being honest is the hardest thing for them, even though the foundation of their relationship is crumbling beneath them. They keep up the facade of being perfect and holding everything together, even though it is easier than telling the truth.

The chorus repeats the same lyrics, emphasizing the burden of the singer's dishonesty and the weight of the collapsing relationship. The second verse continues to describe the singer's efforts to maintain the facade, even as they acknowledge that it is difficult. They reminisce about the happier times they shared with their partner, but the relationship has deteriorated to the point where being torn apart seems inevitable. In the bridge, the singer calls for an end to the denial and urges their partner to face reality and let their relationship crumble if it must.

Overall, "The Truth" is a poignant commentary on the difficulty of being honest in a relationship that is in decline. The lyrics poetically describe the burden of dishonesty, the struggle to maintain the illusion of perfection at all costs, and the ultimate reckoning that must occur when a relationship is on the brink of collapse.

Heard this in the store today and I can’t believe I’ve completely forgot about it until now. I remember hearing this quite a bit on the radio years back. Still such a beautiful song. We need more music like this on the charts. :)
