Fly Away
Allen Peter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're an anchor, I'm uptight
You're what gets me through the night
You keep me steady and on course
Til' I found you I was lost
But you're the earth and I'm sky
And sometimes if I go to high
Well then you pull a string that pulls me back
If not for you I might lose track

And I might fly away
Oh I might fly away, and go my own way
To places that we've never been together
I might fly away (fly away), take to the sky some day
But not for now, not today
Nobody here is flyin' away, away

You have reasons, I have dreams
So we're perfect, so it seems
You talk fortunes, I tell the truth
Kept me from my crazy youth
When you're near me I fee-eel whole
I don't have to rock and roll
I don't worry, I don't think
But baby hold me close and I won't break

I just might fly away
Oh I might fly away, and go my own way
To places that we've never been together
I might fly away (fly away), take to the sky some day
But not for now, not today
Nobody here is flyin', flyin' away
Oh I might fly away (fly away)
I might fly away (fly away)
But not for now-ow, not today
Nobody here is flyin' away (flyin' away)
Oh I might fly away (flyin' away)
I might fly away, take to the sky some day

But not for now, not today
Nobody here is flyin' away

Overall Meaning

In "Fly Away," Allen Peter sings about the push and pull between wanting to explore and go on adventures, and the comfort of having someone steady by his side. The lyrics explore the tension that exists between wanting to go out and explore but also not wanting to leave those we love behind. He describes the other person as an anchor that keeps him from getting lost, and as someone who talks fortunes and keeps him grounded during his "crazy youth."

The song paints a picture of a relationship with the perfect balance - one partner having dreams and aspirations, while the other provides stability and practicality. Allen Peter claims that being around his partner makes him feel "whole," and that he doesn't have to worry about anything when he's with them. This song is all about acknowledging the essential nature of balance in any relationship, especially when it comes to adventures and exploring.

This song is so, so, so sweet. I started my Radio career at a college Radio station in Northern California. My show was a mix of Smooth Jazz, Soul, some rock and a little pop. When I discovered this song in our library of thousands of LP's I thought I had died and went to heaven. It brought Me so much joy that I would crank it up in the studio overwhelmed with the feelings it evoked and made Me so happy to know my audience was experiencing the same feeling. Needless to say I rotated it often on my show. Damn this is fabulous.

This song by Peter Allen goes back over three and a half decades. 1981 to be exact.

@millercgr

This is simply a great pop song by an extremely talented musician. Bought the 45 of this back in 1980 (B-side is "Simon"). Shocked this didn't chart higher than it did.
