Allie revealed on an Instagram Live that originally the track was much slower, somewhere around 70 BPM, but it was sped up to where the track is now, causing the key and pitch of the vocals to change drastically.
"My manager told me: 'don’t keep the pitched vocals, it’s too weird!' and so I had to record them again, but it was too high so I was literally just screaming the lyrics, even live I had to take it down a semitone." Some of said pitched vocals can still be heard on the bridge of the song.

"Allie X" is a Canadian singer-songwriter, and Girl of the Year is one of the songs off her 2017 album "CollXtion II". The song tells the story of a woman who has realized that she is just a plaything for the man she's with, who is only interested in her as a short-term source of energy. Although she understands what he wants from her, she chooses to be with him anyway, accepting his constant lies because she believes that her love for him is all she has. i know the starlet alter ego is all about hollywood desperation as Allie said, but i can't help but interpret this song as being about the music industry nowadays. You know, the verses "you got invested now you're taking me out" and "... i'm here, i don't care if you're looking for the next girl of the year". that's kinda what we do, as audience, specially in this decade:
there's a new artist, there's that hype, and then after it no one cares if they are doing quality content, we just keep on searching someone new to fill our entertainment "hollow"
Allie definitely should have more attention, and she would if people considered talent and uniqueness instead of what's easiest to find around.
But, even if the hype is not with her, Allie will always be girl of the year for people who really understand art.
