Little Things Mean A Lot
Alma Cogan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blow me a kiss from across the room
Say I look nice when I'm not
Touch my hair as you pass my chair
Little things mean a lot
Give me your arm as we cross the street
Call me at six on the dot
A line a day when you're far away
Little things mean a lot
Don't have to buy me diamonds and pearls
Champagne, sables and such
I never cared much for diamonds and pearls
But honestly honey, they just cost money
Give me your hand when I've lost the way
Give me your shoulder to cry on
Whether the day is bright or gray give me your heart to rely on
Send me the warmth of a secret smile
To show me you haven't forgot
Now and forever , that always and ever
Little things mean a lot

Blow me a kiss from across the room
Say I look nice when I'm not
Touch my hair as you pass my chair
Little things mean a lot
Give me your arm as we cross the street
Call me at six on the dot
A line a day when you're far away
Little things mean a lot
Don't have to buy me diamonds and pearls
Champagne, sables and such
I never cared much for diamonds and pearls
But honestly honey, they just cost money
Give me your hand when I've lost the way
Give me your shoulder to cry on
Whether the day is bright or gray give me your heart to rely on
Send me the warmth of a secret smile
To show me you haven't forgot

Now and forever , that always and ever
Little things mean a lot

Overall Meaning

In Alma Cogan's song "Little Things Mean a Lot," the singer expresses her appreciation for the little things in a relationship that often go unnoticed. She sings about the simple and thoughtful gestures that can make a huge difference, such as blowing a kiss from across the room, complimenting her appearance, and touching her hair as you pass by. The singer also values practical actions like giving her your arm as you cross the street or calling her exactly at six o'clock. These small acts of kindness may seem insignificant to some, but to her, they mean the world.

The lyrics also suggest that material possessions are not necessary to express love in a relationship. While diamonds and pearls may seem glamorous, they are ultimately meaningless without genuine acts of love and affection. The singer values emotional support and companionship over material possessions, as evidenced by the lines "give me your hand when I've lost the way" and "give me your shoulder to cry on."

Overall, "Little Things Mean a Lot" is a tribute to the power of simple gestures in a relationship. The song emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the little things and not taking them for granted, as they can have a significant impact on the people we care about.

Just a wonderful entertainer from the days of (comparative) innocence. I was a member of her fan club in the fifties. Nowadays, her style is not fashionable but who cares ? She was superb and always will be !!!

I was a member of Alma Cogan's fan club as a boy of 13 or so. I loved her ! Such a dedicated and cheerful performer, and those 'novelty' song just fine for her voice.   For some time now I have had this wonderful idea !  Let us have a television programme of her songs being sung by Dame Shirley Bassey and Petula Clark, (who also deserves the same recognition as Shirley for her own work on the international stage). These ladies were Alma's contemporaries but with quite different singing styles. It would be most thrilling to hear Alma's songs again now being rendered by her contemporaries, maybe in their own style or with some slight vocal deference to Alma. I would call the TV special, 'Remembering Alma' and I am sure that it would be a great hit.  TV Producers: Please take note !!
