Alma Cogan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

′Cause you've got ONE lucky fella
TWO love you true
And I got THREE little words
I′m savin' FOUR only you
FIVE o'clock I call you
And by SIX we got a date
By SEVEN I′ll be heaven-bound
And in your arms by EIGHT

Everybody now (We got love)
By the numbers (We got love)
Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah (Ain′t it wonderful, we got love)

'Cause I got ONE million kisses
TWO thrill you through and through
And I got THREE thousand hugs
I′m savin' FOUR only you′
FIVE'll get you TEN, Dear,
That in SIX more years we rate
SEVEN little children, Dear,
Or maybe we′ll have EIGHT.

Let me hear it, baby (We got love)
Ah, dontcha know it now (We got love)
Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah (Ain't it wonderful, we got love)

When we marry FIVE'll get you TEN, Dear,
That in SIX more years we rate
SEVEN little children, Dear,
Or maybe we′ll have EIGHT.

All together now (We got love)
Ah let me tell ya (We got love)
Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah (Ain′t it wonderful, we got love)

One more time (We got love)

Ah don'tcha know it baby (We got love)
Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah (Ain′t it wonderful, we got love)

Overall Meaning

In Alma Cogan's song "We Got Love," the lyrics explore the excitement and joy of a new romantic relationship. The song is structured around a set of numbered statements, indicating the progression of the relationship from the beginning. In the first verse, the singer notes that the object of their affection has "got one lucky fella" (the singer themselves) and that they will love them truly. The singer then declares they have "three little words" - presumably "I love you" - that they are saving for their special someone. The time of day is also noted, with the singer declaring that they will call their love interest at five o'clock and have a date set up by six, ultimately ending up in their love's arms by eight.

The second verse follows the same structure but from the perspective of the singer. They note that they have "one million kisses" and "three thousand hugs" and that they're saving them all for their love interest. They also make a playful bet, stating that in five years, they'll have "ten little children, dear" or perhaps only "eight." In the final verse, the singers come together to affirm their love, repeating the numbered structure and celebrating their joy with the refrain "We got love."

Overall, the lyrics of "We Got Love" celebrate the early stages of a committed relationship, highlighting the sense of excitement and anticipation that comes with new love. The numbered structure of the song helps to emphasize the forward momentum of the relationship, as each statement builds upon the last, leading to the ultimate declaration of love in the final verse.

Alma Cogan was a great entertainer, I was aged fifteen when I bought this song. It was a favourite then and still is to this very day. What a lovely person she was.

You only need to hear the wonderful Alma Cogan’s voice and you feel instantly uplifted.
“The Little Shoemaker” and “You, Me and Us”. These are two particular favourite hits from Alma. She was just simply fantastic.
