Crystalnight
Alpinestars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Crystalnight)

When we walked in the sun
And we spoke with our eyes
Knowing what was to come
In the season of ice
When we walked in the sun
And talked in the sun
And we knew everything.

When we lived in a time
That's eluded us now
We try hard to return
But nobody knows how
When we lived in a time
And loved in a time
And we had everything.

(Crystalnight)

Mmmmh, and we knew everything

(Crystalnight)

Now the tables have turned
And the seasons have passed
We have wasted our lives
And strayed from the path
That we walked in the sun
When we talked in the sun
And we had everything

When we walked in the sun
And we spoke with our eyes
Knowing what was to come
In the season of ice
When we walked in the sun
And talked in the sun
And we knew everything

Mmmmh, and we knew everything

Now haven't you heard, haven't you heard?
(Crystalnight)
We're a part of the night.

Now haven't you heard, haven't you heard?
(Crystalnight)
We're a part of the night.

Now haven't you heard, haven't you heard?
We're a part of the night.

Overall Meaning

The song "Crystalnight" by Alpinestars speaks about nostalgia and lost opportunities. The lyrics describe a past time when everything seemed perfect, and the sun shone brightly on their lives. The characters in the song knew what was to come, and they had love and a life full of promise. However, that time has passed, and they can only reminisce about it. They long to return to that moment, but they do not know-how. The seasons have passed, and they have wasted their lives and lost their way.

The song's chorus emphasizes that they are now a part of the night, and there is no turning back. The lyrics suggest that the characters have lost their way, and it is too late to turn back the clock. The song speaks to the fleeting nature of time and how it slips through our fingers.

The song's title, "Crystalnight," is ambiguous and can have multiple meanings. It could refer to a cold winter night or a metaphor for a moment of clarity. Regardless of the interpretation, the song's message remains constant about lost opportunities and the passage of time.

I went to see Saint Etienne perform in London (probably around 2000ish) and their support bands were billed as (iirc) Bronx Dogs and AlpineStars. Come the night Bronx Dogs didn't turn up so we got a full set of (new to me) AlpineStars and I fell in love with them. Shame they only made two albums.
This is such a beautiful song.

Many thanks for your thoughts.....it still amazes me that new people still discover our music by accident and that they like it. We were both thoroughly ahead of, and also behind, our time......Not short of bravery and ambition though x
