"Marks" (1972), their first release, is mostly instrumental with a highly jazzy feel. Quite versatile, it features snippets of calypso, circus music, Dixieland and (of all things!) country music. Their best progressive effort, however, is their second album "Mountain Queen" (1973) which features long instrumental passages with prominent lead guitar, whirling Hammond organ, dual saxophones, electric violin and catchy choruses in a slightly Canterbury style. With the release of "Nobody Can Wait Forever" (1975) and "Best Kept Secret" (1976), however, the band went for a more hard rock sound with shorter, more accessible tunes. Two live albums as well as six compilation cd's of their material were subsequently released by Polydor and various other record labels. With the band's cameback in 2003 they released "Blue Planet" (2005) and "Sailors & Sinners" (2009).
The symphonic style of "Mountain Queen" should appeal to progsters; "Nobody Can Wait Forever" is recommended if you like a more bluesy/funky approach.

I Wish I Could
Alquin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Did you ever meet a man, who reached out for your hand, but you just turned your back.
Transparent people stop and stare you know that you are there, but you just turned your head.
Now your brain will do the rest.
They file it under 'past', to fast.
There must be someone who could show me how to end this endless fight.
Why can't I decide what's to hide inside.
Did you ever meet a friend, who 'd love you till the end and finally put you down.
What was really on her mind.
But she just turned her head.
She said '
Nothing will remain, even friendship 's bitter pain, it fades.'
There must be someone who could show me how to end this endless fight, I must step outside to burn this stupid pride...
I wish I could (I wish I could) believe in all the things you say, I know I should.
Maybe baby.
Baby see.
Monastery is where you came from and mystery is still what you hang on.
Break way, you won't regret it fly away and you will forget 'cause time will heal wounds, believe me.
See how all the hand are joined in there's no need to be disappointed.
Time will heal the, time will heal the wounds.
...
where you came from and mystery is still what you hang on.
Break way, you won't regret it fly away and you will forget 'cause time will heal the, time heal the wounds.
The lyrics to Alquin's song "I Wish I Could" explore themes of regret and the desire to move on from past pain and disappointment. The song opens with the singer lamenting missed opportunities for connection, describing encounters with others who reached out for their hand, only to be rebuffed. The singer understands that their reluctance to connect has consequences, with those they ignore filing those interactions under the label of "past, too fast."
The lyrics then shift to a reflection on a lost friendship, with the singer trying to understand why it fell apart. Despite their efforts to connect with their friend and find out what was going on in their mind, their friend ultimately pulls away, leaving the singer feeling adrift and alone. The chorus of the song acts as a lament to these missed connections and the singer's desire to move on from them.
The lyrics then turn to a plea for help in letting go of the past and moving forward. The singer acknowledges that they need to let go of their pride and accept the help of others in order to heal. The song closes with a call to action, encouraging the singer to break free from where they came from and embrace the mystery and possibilities of life.
Overall, "I Wish I Could" is a poignant reflection on the difficulties of connection and the difficulties we face in moving on from the past.

Yes you ate right Helmut, these were also great dutch bands.
Became a fan of Golden Earring on the end of the sixties. Never saw a band who impressed me live more.
Their eight miles live performance (45 minutes song) is legendary.
Unfortunately they had to stop just recently because of the fact that George Kooijmans got the illness ALS.
He lives in Belgium like me just two km from me and is a great guy.
He also wrote the first hit (seasons) for Earth and Fire.
The Earring are the dutch Rolling Stones and they deserve also the first place of dutch band.
Missed the band "Solution" whoch was also a great band.
Focus was also awfull indeed with dutch best guitarist Jan Akkerman.
He played in Brainbox before.
Plays solo after Focus, my favourite album of him is "The art of Noise" .
Listen to the nr 6 ""Prima Donna".
Loved the Blues bands Cuby and the Livin Blues also very much.

Was hun bestaan ff vergeten tot ik vorige week met mijn fysio over die lekkere oude muziek sprak. Toen herinnerde ik mij weer aan Alquin. Heb het live album Alquin Crash in 70s gekocht. heerlijke muziek
@funkerella
Het live album was 'Alquin On tour'. Crash was een verzamel-dubbelalbum. Staan hier beide in de kast..😊

Clearly remember first time i heard this in the early eighties while standing outside a building. Took me days to find someone who was inside and played this track by just describing the song.
Must have been labeled 'total nut job' by many i asked, but totally worth it !!!!
