In Loving Memory
Alter Bridge Lyrics

Thanks for all
You've done
I've missed you for so long
I can't believe you're gone
You still live
In me
I feel you in the wind
You've got me constantly
I never knew what it was to be loved

Thanks for all you've done
I've missed you for so long
I can't believe you're gone and
You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
You guide me constantly

I never knew what it was to be alone, no
'Cause you were always there for me
You were always home waiting
But now I come home and I miss your face
So smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see

And I know you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel, I can't hold on
I sing tonight 'cause it comforts me

I carry the things that remind me of you
In loving memory of the one that was so true
You were as kind as you could be
And even though you're gone
You still mean the world to me

I never knew what it was to be alone, no
'Cause you were always there for me
You were always home waiting
But now I come home and it's not the same, no
It feels empty and alone
I just can't believe you're gone

And I know you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel, I can't hold on
I sing tonight 'cause it comforts me

I'm glad it sets you free from sorrow
But I'll still love you more tomorrow
And you'll be here with me still
All you did you did with feeling
And you always found a meaning

And you always will
And you always will
And you always will

And I know you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free

I sing it while I feel, I can't hold on
I sing tonight 'cause it comforts me

Overall Meaning

Alter Bridge's song "In Loving Memory" was written by Mark Tremonti, the band's guitarist, in memory of his mother who passed away from brain cancer. The song expresses the feeling of grief and loss that Tremonti and his family felt after losing their loved one. The lyrics are poignant and heartfelt, with Tremonti expressing his love and gratitude for his mother, while also acknowledging the devastating pain of her absence.

The opening lines of the song, "Thanks for all you've done, I've missed you for so long, I can't believe you're gone" express the deep sense of loss and disbelief that comes with the death of a loved one. Tremonti's description of how he "feel[s] [his mother] in the wind" and how she "guide[s] [him] constantly" speaks to the idea that even though someone we love may be gone physically, they often remain with us in spirit and can continue to provide us with comfort and guidance.

"I carry things that remind me of you."

To this day I carry my mom's drivers license in my wallet wherever I go.

I was suicidal when I lost her far too soon. I went to this AB concert. (She bought the tickets before she passed) Miles sang this song. That line literally felt like a message from my mom. It saved my life.

I still have a hard time listening to this song, but I love it.

Thank you Alter Bridge.

I believe this is what life is; the beauty and the pain - nothing ventured, nothing gained. To love something; you take a risk - but to never love; life's essence goes missed.

When i'm down, I tend to remind myself of these words written to a Ms. Bixby during WW2 (even thou out of context, it illustrates how precious life / time together is, and that it is all we have in the end, the endearing memories of loved ones and times passed.

"Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln."
