Can't Stand Losing You
Alton Ellis/Hortense Ellis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guess there's no use in hangin' 'round
Guess I'll get dressed and do the town
I'll find some crowded avenue
Though it will be empty without you

Can't get used to losin' you
No matter what I try to do
Gonna live my whole life through
Loving you

Called up some girl I used to know
After I heard her say "Hello"
Couldn't think of anything to say
Since you're gone it happens every day

Can't get used to losin' you
No matter what I try to do
Gonna live my whole life through
Loving you

I'll find somebody, wait and see
Who am I kiddin', only me
'Cause no one else could take your place
Guess that I am just a hopeless case

Can't get used to losin' you
No matter what I try to do
Gonna live my whole life through
Loving you

Can't get used to losin' you
No matter what I try to do

Gonna live my whole life through
Loving you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Alton and Hortense Ellis's "Can't Stand Losing You" are about the aftermath of a breakup. The singer is trying to move on by going out and doing things, but finds that everything reminds them of their former partner. They call up an old acquaintance but can't think of anything to say, as memories of the past relationship keep intruding. At the end of the song, the singer realizes that they will never be able to fully move on and find someone else to replace their former love. The lyrics speak to the universal experience of heartbreak and the difficulty of moving on from a relationship.

One interesting fact about the song is that it was written by the legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach, along with his regular collaborator Hal David. Bacharach is known for penning many classic songs from the 1960s and 1970s, such as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" and "I Say a Little Prayer." Another interesting fact is that "Can't Stand Losing You" was covered by the English rock band The Police on their debut album Outlandos d'Amour, with altered lyrics that added a darker, more violent tone to the song.
