Not Above Love
AlunaGeorge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't usually go all in, babe
But you're a hum that I had to play
And you took me all the way
Make me lose more than I could win, babe
And I really need to let you know

I'm not above love, I just ran out of it
I'm not above love, so it's not like I don't care
And I know you're thinking the worst of me
But I hope one day you'll see
I'm not above love, I just ran out of it

You keep robbing my heart like a bank
And I only got myself to blame
You keep robbing my heart like a bank
No thank you, no thank you

I'm not gonna call you in
'Cause you're taking everything
You keep robbing my heart like a bank
No thank you, no thank you

I don't usually overdose
But you're a drug that I had to take
Another fix, I couldn't wait
Now the edge is far too close
So I really need to let you know

You keep robbing my heart like a bank
And I only got myself to blame
You keep robbing my heart like a bank
No thank you, no thank you
I'm not gonna call you in
'Cause you're taking everything
You keep robbing my heart like a bank
No thank you

You took me to a place so far from here
You took me to another atmosphere
But I got so high, I couldn't breathe
And I've been holding, holding, holding, holding, holding, holding

I'm not above love, I just ran out of it
I'm not above love, so it's not like I don't care
And I know you're thinking the worst of me
But I hope one day you'll see
I'm not above love, I just ran out of it

You keep robbing my heart like a bank
And I only got myself to blame
You keep robbing my heart like a bank
No thank you, no thank you

I'm not gonna call you in
'Cause you're taking everything

You keep robbing my heart like a bank
No thank you, no thank you

Overall Meaning

AlunaGeorge’s β€œNot Above Love” is a love song that describes a romantic relationship that is at once addictive and painful. The track opens with the admission that the singer does not typically get completely invested in romantic interests, but the object of her affection this time was too hard to resist. Despite the intense feelings, the singer admits that the relationship is a net negative, causing her to lose more than she gains. However, she insists that it's not because she is above love; she claims to have simply run out of the emotion. Throughout the song, she likens her lover to a drug that she couldn't resist and argues that she doesn't want to call them back because they are taking everything from her.

In the chorus, she reiterates that her love may be exhausted, but she still cares. She entreats her lover to look beyond the apparent failure of the relationship and see that she is not beyond love. However, the lover continues to take from her like a bank robber, forcing her to withhold affection ("no thank you") and protect herself. The bridge of the song sees the singer recounting the dizzying highs that she experienced with her lover, likening them to a trip to another planet. However, the contrast between the high and the low points of the relationship is causing her to hold back and protect herself.
