Born Graham Barnes in Nottingham England, Alvin Lee took up guitar at the age of thirteen. By the age of fifteen he had formed the group Jaybirds. Following in the footsteps of earlier beat groups such as the Beatles, the Jaybirds played the clubs in Hamburg, Germany to great local acclaim. On returning to London in 1966, the group changed its name to Ten Years After.
Ten Years After scored hits with many albums and became a popular touring band. The band gained note in America after their appearance at Woodstock in 1969.
Lee's guitar work on ‘I’m Going Home’ on the 'Woodstock' album and film remains a standard for many rock guitarists to emulate.
Ten Years After played a mix of rock and blues tinged with jazz. In 1973, Lee left Ten Years After to pursue a solo career.
His first work was a collaborative effort with American gospel singer Mylon LeFevre on an album entitled On The Road To Freedom; other artists on the album included George Harrison, Mick Fleetwood and Steve Winwood. A year later he formed the band Alvin Lee & Company and released a double live album recorded at the Rainbow in London, In Flight.
Lee continued to record albums and play live until his death in 2013, thrilling audiences with his guitar virtuoso and nimble fingered fret work.
Having recorded over twenty albums, some of the key solo works Alvin Lee has recorded are:
1973 On The Road To Feedom

Goin' home, my baby
Goin' home, to see my baby
Our baby, how good
My baby, be good
I'm goin' home, my baby
Home to see my girl
Oh baby, baby, I'm coming home
Baby, baby I'm coming home
Tell me Mama, baby, I'm coming home
Gonna see my baby, see my baby fine
Gonna take my baby, want to take my baby mine
Gonna take my woman treats me real kind
I'm goin' home, my baby
I'm goin' home, to see my baby
Goin' home, my baby
Gonna see my baby, see my baby fine
Take my baby, take my baby mine
Gonna tell your mama how good that love of ours
I'm goin' home, to see my baby
I'm goin' home, to see my baby
Oh, baby ooh
Want to take you back, take where love belong
Treat me baby, treat, don't treat me wrong
Oh, baby, I'm rollin'
Baby, baby, I'm rollin'
Baby, baby, I'm rollin'
Won't you shake me, baby, well get you rollin' down
Won't you shake me, baby, well get you rollin' down
Oh, baby, we're gonna have some fun
Baby, please don't go, baby, please don't go
Baby, please don't go, baby, please don't go
Please don't go, she's cold, I need you
Comin' home, ooh, hey
Come on over baby, whole lotta shakin' goin' on
I'm goin' home, to see my baby
Home, to see my girl, ooh
I'm goin' home, take my baby
I'm goin' home, see my baby
Gonna take me back, I'll take her where I belong
I'm goin' home, to see my baby
I'm goin' home, to see my baby
Come on, Take me, Yeah
I'm goin' home, I'm goin' home
I'm goin' home, hey, hoo
Gonna take me back right where I belong
I'm goin' home, I'm goin' home
I'm goin' home, I'm goin' home
Hoo, hoo, right where I belong
The lyrics to Alvin Lee's "I'm Going Home" indicate a desire to return home to a loved one. The repetition of the phrase "goin' home, my baby" emphasizes this desire to reunite with the significant other. The singer expresses excitement to see the baby and describes a desire to take them someplace where they belong. The lines "gonna take my woman treats me real kind" and "take me baby, treat me, don't treat me wrong" convey a sense of love and affection for the significant other. The shift towards the end of the song from talking about the baby to pleading for them not to go creates a sense of desperation to remain together.
The use of "baby" throughout the song is significant as it expresses both a sense of intimacy and emotionality. The repetition of the phrase "going home" creates a sense of longing and anticipation towards return, as if the singer is solely focused on being reunited with their love. Additionally, the repetition of phrases such as "gonna take my baby, want to take my baby mine" and "I'm going home, to see my baby" conveys a sense of ownership over the significant other as well as an intense desire to be around them.
Overall, "I'm Going Home" is a song about the importance of being with one's loved ones, particularly in a context where physical distance has driven a wedge between the couple. The repetition of the phrase "goin' home, my baby" and the focus on the emotional connection between two people makes this song a powerful tribute to the significance of love.
