Coming back to this to honor the legend. R.I.P. Lucier

Named my radio show after this my freshman year of college. Nobody has influenced the way I listen to music as much as Lucier. He was amazing. RIP

I knew a married couple who were together the equivalent of three music schools worth of music historians in two brains, and they carefully dubbed me a high quality cassette with 90 minutes of this, as much as could possibly fit on one cassette. I listened to it many times, and have studied how it was made. Thank you. p.s., the Long Thin Wire and Craig Huxley's Blaster Beam (Goldsmith's "Klingon Attack" and "V'Ger" themes, and 2010 (1984)) occupy similar spaces in my understanding of semi-mechanical, semi-electronic instruments of the period.

The first Music... was originally broadcast live on KUNM in Albuquerque in 1979 A live connection to Alvin's equipment at Winrock shopping Center was used. The long thin wire was in a public area. No interruption for the entire broadcast (five continuous days) required permission from the FCC at that time. Changes in the environment and presence or absence of customers creates the variations. This is evidently from a different version.

When my music teacher played this in class he said it was from a shopping centre. But it looks like that's not what got released on vinyl:

"These recordings were made by the composer on May 10, 1979 in the Rotunda of the U.S. Custom House, Bowling Green, NY City." From the sleeve notes, as per the "discogs" website linked above

I love this channel, and the detailed notes on each album. Cheers/thanks!

Brilliant and beautiful. It's a shame so few people would be able to listen to this as music.
