Pretend
Alvin Stardust Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pretend you're happy when you're blue
It isn't very hard to do
And you will find happiness without
An end if you pretend

Remember anyone can dream
And nothin's bad as it may seem
The little things you haven't got could be
A lot if you pretend

You'll find a love you can share
One you can call your own
Just close your eyes you'll be there
You'll never be alone

And if you sing this melody
You'll be pretending just like me
The world is mine it can be yours my friend
So why don't you pretend

You'll find a love you can share
One you can call your own
Just close your eyes you'll be there
You'll never be alone

And if you sing this melody
You'll be pretending just like me
The world is mine it can be yours my friend
So why don't you pretend

So why don't you pretend

So why don't you pretend
So why don't you pretend

Ha! I was 10 in 1981 when this record hit the charts! I begged my mum to get it for me, and bless her - she did! I remember bopping around the living room with her to this tune. Pretending was something my mum and I had to do a lot of back in '81. It was just us and we were as poor as church mice - poor in money, but there was always plenty of love to go 'round. We had a record player, though and were happy! Miss you mum - sleep well my lovely. Until we meet again x

Rest in Peace Alvin Stardust 🙏. I loved this song when it came out. I was the same age as the kids in the video. I love the guitar break.

It is my favorite guitar solo. I emailed Shane shortly before he died and asked him who did it. He said it was the guitarist in Matchbox.

@harvey1954 Good to know that. I had always believed that it was the late, great Big Jim Sullivan. I love the guitar in "Buzz, buzz, a diddle-it"!
