Don't Stop Believin'
Alvin and The Chipmunks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world.
She took the midnight train going anywhere.
Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit.
He took the midnight train going anywhere.

A singer in a cloudy room.
A smell of fur and cheap cartoons.
For a smile, they can watch our show.
It goes on and on and on and on.

Strangers (strangers) waiting (waiting),
Up and down the boulevard (ooh).
Their shadows (shadows) searchin' in the night (night).
Streetlight (streetlight) people (people),livin' just to find emotion.
Hidin' (hidin') somewhere (somewhere)in the night (night).

Workin' hard to get my fill, everybody wants a thrill.
Payin' anything to roll the dice just one more time.
Some will win and some will lose.
Some were born to sing the blues.
Oh,the movie never ends.

Don't Stop Believin'.
Hold on to the feeling.
Streetlight people.

Overall Meaning

The song "Don't Stop Believin'" by Alvin and the Chipmunks tells the story of two individuals, a small-town girl and a city boy, both searching for their dreams in a chaotic world. The girl is living alone in a lonely place, and she decides to take a midnight train to anywhere, hoping to find fulfilment and purpose in her life. The city boy, on the other hand, was born and raised in South Detroit and decides to take a midnight train going anywhere, as he is also looking for something more out of life.

The lyrics describe the life of performers, where they sometimes find themselves singing to just a few people in a cloudy room filled with the smell of fur and cheap cartoons. However, they keep on going with the hope that one of their listeners will smile. The song expresses the struggles of people waiting for their dreams to come true, hoping for a break that could take them from obscurity to stardom.

The chorus of the song, "Don't Stop Believin'," communicates the message that despite life's challenges, one should never give up hope and should always believe that things can get better. The song reinforces the belief that we are all in this together, with streetlight people trying to find emotion and purpose. The message is clear: continue to search, continue to seek, and never stop believing that something magical could happen.

I wish there was a version of this with the Chipmunks and Chipettes; it would be like the Glee version almost

Daniel Davies

Yeah, that could work. Depends if Disney can easily get the rights to the song...

Love the chipmunks. Too bad their original cartoon albums are nowhere to be found anymore

Stephen Wells

Which original cartoon are you talking about? Most of the 80s/90s era albums can be found on YouTube, but the 60s era albums are hard to find online. You can buy them on Amazon though, if you don't mind paying for it.

iPeeTheRainbow

I think I may have been using my tablet when I posted this which would explain why I couldn't find any. I managed to find them when I went back on my computer though.
