Reverb-drenched and bittersweet, Alvvays members Molly Rankin and Kerri MacLellan were childhood friends, who began playing music with Alec O'Hanley while in high school. Lead vocalist Molly Rankin is the daughter of John Morris Rankin from the popular Canadian folk family group the Rankin Family. Molly Rankin released a solo EP titled "She EP" in 2010 and then in 2011 formed Alvvays with MacLellan, O'Hanley, and new members Brian Murphy and Phil MacIsaac.
Following tours with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Peter Bjorn and John, the group recorded a full-length album, Alvvays, which was released by Royal Mountain Records (Canada), Polyvinyl Records (US), and Transgressive Records (Europe) in July 2014. Chad VanGaalen, John Agnello, and Graham Walsh of Holy Fuck all contributed to the album's production. Simon Vozick-Levinson, writing in Rolling Stone, called the eponymous album an "indie-pop wonder". Alvvays went to #1 on US college charts on August 5, 2014.
Atop a Cake

It's what you said last night
You'd like us on top of a cake
But you won't let me take a bite
Flowers arriving in fleets
Can't we talk about this?
Why let the State in our sheets?
Well, I don't mean to wind you up
But I'd like to slow it down
How do I remain a pup?
If you put me in a gown?
What's it gotta do with you?
What's it gotta do with me?
How could I lose control when you're driving from the backseat?
What's it gotta do with you?
What's it gotta do with me?
How could I lose control when you're driving from the backseat?
Corners begin to repeat
I think we're getting lost
We walked to the end of the street
But we were bitten by the frost
So if you have to thaw me out
You can put me in a pail
Can we take another route?
I don't want to wear a veil
What's it gotta do with you?
What's it gotta do with me?
How could I lose control when you're driving from the backseat?
What's it gotta do with you?
What's it gotta do with me?
How could I lose control when you're driving from the backseat?
I'll wait in the lobby for someone to show
And if they don't come, I will know where to go
The bodies are lined up outside in the hall
I don't want to decay in a mall
If everything you say is true
Then why would I disagree?
How can I lose control...?
What's it gotta do with you?
What's it gotta do with me?
How could I lose control when you're driving from the backseat?
When you're driving from the backseat
The first verse of Alvvays's "Atop a Cake" tells the story of a conversation between two people, presumably romantic partners. The first person lies on a sofa awake, perhaps unable to sleep because of the conversation that they had with the other partner the night before. The other partner expressed their desire to see the two of them on top of a cake, but at the same time, won't let the first person take a bite. The second verse goes on to talk about how flowers are being delivered in fleets, and the two partners are having a disagreement about letting the state into their lives. The first person is questioning why they have to deal with this when they just want to be with one another.
In the chorus, the first person continually questions the situation, asking what it has to do with them and why they are losing control when the other partner is in the driving seat. The bridge switches the mood, describing the situation as being stuck in a cycle. They have walked to the end of their street and have been bitten by the frost, perhaps as a metaphor for being stuck in a dead end. The first person doesn't want to decay in a mall but wants to find another way. The second part of the bridge shows the frustration of the first person with the situation, unable to find common ground with the other person.
